at 17 when I got it in Feb. '69 and fixed it up from stock into an ultimate surfmobile. Mine was a '61 with split front seats, and also the first year for 40 horse and full sychro tranny. Those are 16x8.5 rims on the back and 16x7 on the front with Firestoned SuperSports GP racing tires. That's me on the lawn with Cheryl, not me at the back of my bus. The yellow one is pictured on Van Nuys Blvd. in 1970, and was a perfect '58 or '59 with a Corvair engine and transaxle and was aircraft quality throughout. My van-club buddy who built it then while in high-school is now a Gulfstream pilot. Type II are for weenies.

Check out thesamba.com Paul, lots of spare parts and go fast goodies.

I had a 68 transporter, the first car I owned in the US. Bought it from the original owner in Santa Barbara, wish I still had it now.

IT IS A 1971 CREWCAB . IT IS MAGIC BECAUSE IT WILL GO 70 AND HAUL MY ENTIRE FAMILY + 1000 POUNDS

OF JUNK WHILE PULLING MY HIT-N-MISS ICE CREAM MACHINE - ALL ON A BEETLE ENGINE .

THERE ARE JUST FOUR BOLTS TO REMOVE THE ENGINE AND

IT COMES STRAIGHT OUT THE BACK .

YOU DON'T HAVE TO JACK IT UP TO REVOVE IT .

John C. and crew for my 67 T1..I'm talking complete pan off resto and brand spanking new 2275 rice-beater, 200+HP.

They actually give a shit about you the customer..not a trivial thing in the aircooled VW scene.

It really was groovy!

"Son of Stoopid List," "The Return of Son of Stoopid List." "The Revenge of Stoopid List." "Stoopid List Strikes Back," etc., etc.

Type 1 would be great to drive down to Home Depot for drywall. That way there's lots of folks in the parking lot to give you a push to get started for the drive home. ;)

Peace.

Delia

The best "message board" I've seen for the 'loaf" van's, which includes your 1971-to be is at Type2.com This is a real "together" group of owners as you will no doubt learn. They even run a nationwide emergency repair list where members can volunteer to help oneanonther when they have trouble on the road. And the list is very effectively moderated. It is a model for other mark's fans to emulate.

On the "dis" of the 914 suitcase engine, I have a '75 Westfalia Van with the 1.8 FI version of that which has never given me a bit of trouble. A great vehicle, but you have to drive it conservatively if you want it to last.

BUSSES ARE TYPE 2's . THEY HAVE TYPE 1 ENGINES IN

EARLIER BUSSES (1950-1971)AND TYPE 4 ENGINES IN LATER ONES (1972-1979).

A LOT OF BUSSIPHILES REFER TO THE EARLIER BODY STYLE A SPLIT-WINDOW AND LATER ONES AS BAY-WINDOW .

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
