gas tank rupturing when rear ended

What usually happens is that the filler neck pops off, especially in the early cars with the big filler boot.

The E21 had the right idea putting the gas tank under the rear seat...

thank you for that, but Tobyb"s answer was  more what i was looking for. i know that if someone rear ends you at high speeds all bets are off. but a few people on here have been rear ended. :(  was asking for their experience/prospective. most of the time  it will be under 30 mph, thats my experience anyway.

tank location is one of the worst safety issues with these cars.  especially for the "bumper delete" or roundie crowd.  there is no protection around the tank at all, and it is fully exposed below the bumper.  fuel cell a great (if expensive) idea....

My 69 had a fuel cell in the trunk. I took it out, mostly because it was installed so damn badly... But the only thing I dont like about them is the fact that you have to go into the trunk to fill the tank. But I agree with the safety part, hell, ive almost put a hole in mine twice from the bottom side! Dont ask....

When my '02 was rear-ended at a red light in North Seattle years ago ("I was looking for my purse," the woman said) I was able to drive away from the scene of the crime. Later, when I put some gas in the car to drive to the insurance claim facility the gas tank immediately began to leak. I waited until the leak stopped - around 3/4 of a tank remained and it was easy to see where the leak originated on the tank.  I drove it to the insurance place ("That'll take about $2000 to fix," they told me incorrectly), and then had it towed to a local den of thieves i.e. body shop.

Insurance did come through in the end and I was adequately reimbursed, ruptured gas tank notwithstanding.

My first 2002 only had a one to two gallons of gas when I got plowed into by a 70's Monte Carlo with it's big bumpers & long hood. Gas tank got shortened a bit as you can see. It did not leak, did not explode.  www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/69147-my-first-love-73-2002-in-its-final-resting-spot-in-1980/  Car was only 7 years old then. His speed was estimated at 60 to 65. I was stopped with my foot on brake. Monte Carlo driver had been drinking.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
