Is an auto gearbox worth much?

I swapped a manual into a friend's automatic ('73 2002), and neither he nor I want the auto box. It's just sitting in my garage. I don't think it worked perfectly, but it did work, so it's probably worth saving if anyone wants it. Anyone have an idea of what I should ask for it, or if anyone is likely to want it at all? Any of you guys want it? I'm in Portland, OR.

hi .... i posted the message above at about the same time you posted this message.. i would like to learn how to swap the gear box.. what is the difficulty factor in tackling this type of project??

It's pretty easy, really. Here's what you'll need (if using a 4 speed

box like I did):

- 4 speed driveshaft

- manual pedal box

- manual brake fluid resivour

- clutch master cylinder and feed pipe (to connect to resivour)

- clutch slave cylinder and feed pipe

- manual flywheel and new flywheel bolts

- pilot bearing (automatic doen't use one)

- clutch disc and pressure plate

- manual tranny (obviously) and associated shift platform, shifter,

linkage, etc.

- interior shifter surround, shift boot, etc.

Just pull the auto tranny like you would normally. Remove the

exhaust, driveshaft, automatic flywheel and driveplate. remove

anything associated with the automatic tranny, basically.

Remove the auto pedal box. Install manual pedal box and all

clutch hydraulic hardware except the slave cyl. (clutch master,

new resivour, connecting pipes).

Bolt up new flywheel, tap pilot bearing into end of crankshaft.

center clutch disc with allignment tool and bolt on pressure plate

(use locktite).

Install manual tranny (easier said than done, I know). Install slave

cyl and connect to master w/ proper pipe. Install driveshaft. Re-

install exhaust.

I know this is incredibly simplistic, but I don't have enough time

to write it all out. For elaboration on any of this stuff, search this

site; that's how I got all my information.

you'll also need a throw-out bearing that matches the tranny

(they're different for 2002 and 320 trannies)

Just as an additional bit of information, if a 5 speed is not

important to you, you can use a 4 speed from an early 320 as well

as a 2002. They're slightly different, but the same length so you

can use the same driveshaft. My brother has one in his '02 and it

works great. Only difference is the slave cylinder and the throw-

out bearing.
