It looks like I will be able to acquire a close ratio 5 speed out of a buddies e21 later this year, in exchange for the auto box thats in my 02 currently.

Apart for all parts needed to complete the swap, is there anything I should be aware of on this type of gearbox?

TIA

it should fit in the same/be the same conversation as the overdrive five speed. It is a stronger and more durable box than the '02 variety. I have one in a big wooden box in my garage and the steel syncro '02 close ratio box in my tii. I guess I need to buy another '02 for the e21 version.....

I have an '81 e21 Alpina B6 that has the bmw factory close ratio 5spd in it and it's very rare...it has the dogleg first gear (first is normally where second would be). I've never seen this tranny in any US spec e21...

Firstly, I'm talking about a RHD e21, and secondly the gate pattern is as follows, R 2 4

1 3 5

If my memory is correct. My understanding is that they are rare, and this is one of my concerns if it needs to be rebuilt at some stage, will the parts be available.

Thanks for your input.

shape at this time fortunetly, but finding the parts for it would probably be very hard...I've never really looked....I imagine if you search around in Europe you may have some luck. I know there are a couple guys on this board who source many rare european 02 parts...maybe one of them can help.

Hey.

Geoff Cranna in the NSW BMW Drivers' club has one, in his blue squarie tii. I don't have contact details for him though :( He gave me his email addy at the bmw nationals this year but I appear to have misplaced it.

I'm not sure on parts availability, but I *think* bavariacars did the rebuild/conversion? Have you posted this Q on the aussie branch DTm boards? Because Erik from bavariacars posts there and he may be able to help you. Also, the BMW club has a superdoopersprint on october 12 at eastern creek.(I'll be running our turbo there :D ) Is this in your area? It is possible Mr Cranna will be running at this event. (obviously no good if you are in brisbane or something...)

Other than that, Can't help ya, but I must say, that I would love one of those things.

Greeeen with envy,

Michael :)

but the synchros are the same as in an 02 4 speed transmission. IIRC, just about all of the basic consumable parts (bearings, seals, synchro's, etc..) are available through BMW or other sources.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
