and probably more. Not just trim, but early non-headrest, my late '69 1600-2 (1568041) had headrests and slightly more curvature to the back, my '74 has (since Recaro'd) different seats than the '69, and my parts '75 has different seats than the '74. I think there were slightly different seats in the '76 too, and the Turbo had its' version. Rear seats have had a few versions too.

1. 1600 seats prior to '68--non reclining, no headrests

2. 2002 Pre late-68 seats--recline, no headrests

3. 2002 "second series" '69 to sometime in late '69 or early '70--recline, wide-spaced headrest mounts. Seat backs are about 1-2 inches wider than later seats. Can be recognized by the inboard recliner mechanism hidden under the upholstery. With these seats, you can't reach your arm between the front seats as the backs nearly touch. These may have been leftover or surplus Neue Klasse seats...

4. Remainder of the round light cars--as #3 above but with narrower seat backs; recliner mechanism is exposed on both sides. Sometime in late '71 chrome recliner mechanisms were replaced with black painted ones, but this seems to have been done as they ran out of chrome seats vs all at once.

5. Squarelight cars have different-shaped seats with different recliner mechanisms. I believe all these cars have the closely-spaced headrest mounts, similar to the standard seats on E21s. Much flimsier quality vinyl upholstery and gummihaar.

6. Sports seats, as fitted to Turbos and optional equipment on Euro cars. Not fitted to any USA cars.

Two types of seat tracks: early ones have horizonatal front and rear mounting bolts; later ones have the front bolt mounting horizontally.

Hope this helps...

Cheers

'74 2002's are the only squarelight cars with the headrest posts toward the corners, '75 and '76 are more centered, also, the '74's are the only cars where the pleats for the vinyl don't go all the way to the top of the seats, there is a section at the front and rear seat backrest sections of unpleated material. Some 2002's also were available with cloth inserts, somewhat rare though. A note of interest, you can put a 320i front seat backrest to replace the 2002, and use headrests from an E-12 or E-28, those headrests tilt forward, kind of a neat feature.

Mike,

I can speak to the seats in the 74. The headrest had the supports that extended to the edge of the seat backs. In other words not the narrow type as found on the 76.

having only owned roundies, I knew the headrest styles changed, but didn't know for sure when. 1975 makes sense, as that's when they started building E21s, and it was a simple matter to rationalize the seats between the two cars.

on my '74 2002 the cover for the front seat backrests unscrews and folds down, ( the screws are on the side) whereas on other models there are the 3 screws at the base of the seat bottom and you lift up and out. On a side note, I just found out that my '69 2000 Neue Klasse, I'll need to get a Bavaria type blower motor, I thought they were the same as the 2002's. The blower motor is getting power but the brushes are probably gone, I'll post some pictures for you guys soon, nice rebuilt engine, new oe exhaust system, and hopefully the new flex line/hose for the clutch will solve the occasional hard pedal problem.

perhaps we can confirm the "wide" seat backs on the 69 '02s were in fact leftover NK four door seats. That's how the dark blue interiors got into the 69 and 70 white 2002s--the factory was using up surplus blue seats. The sales catalog shows only black interiors for white cars in '69...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
