Rear enders

It seems...and I could be way off base here, that a lot of the accidents guys on this board have been in are R-E'ers. Is that correct? If so, why? Are the tail/brake lites that poor. I'd guess most accidents are in the roundies due to the smaller lenses. Reason I'm asking is I'm looking into making a rear window tail lite for '02's. Thoughts?

Certainly it's been said that the round tailights are rather small when contrasted to other configurations one sees each day. In relation to square lights, it's not uncommon for the reflective plating on the plastic reflector body to become dusty, and attempts to clean a reflector body will usually result in the delicate plating being washed away resulting in less visible brakelights. Accidents seem to claim ten to a dozen '02's on this board every year...

low position: especially if you are 2 stories up in the cabin of a monster escaldade, Rover, etc. I noticed a huge illumination difference between brand new round lenses and my clean, original lenses when i installed some new ones on a friend's car. had to be 2x brighter. Cannot change bulbs: brighter bulbs= bulb burn in lens. Others respray aluminum backing and achieve brighter lights. I am thinking about respraying the reflective surface and adding that diode cyclops for under the top of rear glass. But i have dark tint: wont do much good. Another friend wired the red rearfog light into the brake light circuit and it adds another all red / bright light to alert braking is occurring. anyway- i am always paranoid when i come to stop and I always look in rear mirror to see if traffic is slowing. I have pulled over a few times when i saw a cellphone user talking on a cell phone and maintaining speed while i was stopped for traffic.

The NHTSA was just as well-intentioned when it instituted the CHMSLs a number of years ago. Most drivers are now used to seeing them on the car ahead.

Presuming it's good design, I'd feel better about having one.

In the late 1970s, Bosch made an accessory brake light/turn signal kit that mounted on a rod fitted between the package tray and the top of the rear window. You could put one on either side of the car and it really got folks to pay attention.

Cheers!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
