I need to replace my guibo. Is it a major PITA to do? I'd also like to replace the bolts with new ones,

what are the bolt specs for the 8 bolt guibo? I've also checked the rear tranny mount and center support bearing but both seem fine. can I just loosen the center support to replace the guibo or do i have to take the whole drive shaft out? About how long should it take to replace? Conversely, is there a shop in San Francisco that you would recommend to do said work? I need my car by the weekend.

I would just get the guibo and the bolts from the same place, an authorized BMW parts source. If you get some with different size heads you might not be able to tighten them.

Changing the guibo is not too tough. The worst part is getting wrenches on the nuts and bolts. This is from memory. Hope I haven't left anything out.

Put the car way up on jackstands.

Remove guibo bolts.

Drop the center support.

Pop out the old guibo.

Clean everything up.

Put in new guibo.

Tighten the nuts only.

Re-install center support.

Make sure everything is nice and straight.

...you might want to consider replacing the shift platform bushings while you're there. They're maybe another $15 or $20 for both.

Indeed, drop the center support to get the guibo out. When replacing the nuts/bolts, the bolt heads go up against the guibo, whereas the nutted end goes through the hole in the driveshaft or output flange. Some folks install all the bolts in the same direction, but I wouldn't advise doing it that way.

I just did mine a few months ago. two wrenches and you'll be fine (19mm?) Make sure you only use dealer bolts because they are specially hardened.

And I second the replacement of shift platform bushings and any worn shifter components.

Don't remove the metal or plastic band from the guibo until after it's bolted up; otherwise the holes will never align properly and you'll learn a whole new vocabulary!

....1st-your car is sweeet! Very nice set-up.

2nd-do you have a five speed or four speed? If it's a four just do

the swap as described below by the others-USE DEALER SUPPLIED

BOLTS AND LOTS OF BLUE LOC-TITE!!!! If it's a five, check

alignment-two, maybe three times until you would bet your

eyesight on it being straight-then swap.

It's a three beer/one evening job-floor jack, jackstands and

creeper are essential imo. The higher off the ground the easier the

job is. Oh-the exhaust has to be loosened too. Just the front three

bolts holding the down pipe to the resonator and the mount to

the tranny (if you have one-I don't) should do it. Get those bolts

from the dealer ahead of time too-they snap.
