All Dashboards Are Tii Dashboards

I am sure some of you already know this, and it may not apply to Every model.

But the dashboards in some non tii cars have a round indent on the backside where the clock can go through.  If you want to install a clock in your non tii dash, all you have to do is carefully cut the diameter of the indentation in the foam and you will have a tii dash.  ( I also believe the metal support under the foam is pre-cut from the factory on all dashboards with this indentation ).

Cheers,

MF

Correct, I scored a crack free Euro spec one piece dash (no fasten seat belt billboard on top of the dash) a few years ago at an automotive flea market in Germany and mailed it back. The old dash in my tii had enough cracks that it was toast so that dash was pulled and the one I scored in Germany went in.  We did the cut out like MF said above for the tii clock and now it's looking great in my tii.

The clock connects to the gauge cluster with a harness for power. Non ti/tii vehicles may have a foam plug covering the (3) terminals.

Jim,

You are awesome!!!

Guess what I JUST now completed? Installing my re-soldered, junkyard-find, Tii clock!!! I must give credit to Ray Koke for pointing me to this clock (it was mis-listed on eBay and Ray "gave" it to me) as luck would have it, the car was in a junkyard near me and I was able to find the wiring harness and other goodies. It was not a Tii, though. Just had the clock...

Been super nervous about cutting the dash, but you can easily feel those indentions from the backside ( I can easily reach up behind my center console). Just took a very sharp exacto knife and carefully started from the center and made the hole a little bigger and a little bigger, till the clock fit snugly. Plugged everything in annnnndd...wait for it....CLUNK...tick, tick, tick, tick, tick...

I have the stupidest grin on my face right now. What a joy to hear this clock running!! Here's some pics...

  • 2 years later...

For those who wish to remain "clunkless", the VDO quartz clock is a nice option.

It took me years of hand-wringing over drilling a hole in my dash....but when I realized the cut-out in the bulkhead and perforation on the back of the dash for the clock was already there....I just did it. Measure 3 times and cut once. I used a 2 1/8" hole saw on a cordless drill.

I made a 3-pin plug by cutting off a section of a 9-pin appliance plug. Correct wire colors: Red = 12V, Brown = ground, Grey = light (dimmer).

That decision was already made for me.  The PO just happened to poke a hole in the very same spot to route the wiring for a VDO clock sitting in a gauge pod mounted on the dash board!!!  It was a straight forward matter to remove the silly dash pod, open up the hole and install the clock.

Interesting. I did wonder if RHD dashes would be different. It seems not but it could be related to the availability of tii cars in RHD since I don't think any RHD ti cars exist.

I've often wondered why BMW never produced a RHD 1600ti or 2002ti, as they did produce RHD NK 1800ti and 2000ti.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
