its going to be the longest journey in the 02, i was wondering what precautions i should take before i hop onto the journey...everything is pretty much original & hasn't had an engine rebuilt...but runs great besides oil burning...

my partner is kinda worried it might not take all that strain...what do you guys think? safe ride? i'm really looking fwd to the drive...it's gng to be a blast in it..

all this thnks to the dumb ass e36 325i which has been in the shop for 3 weeks for gearbox problems! but hey i got an excuse to drive this baby down instead..i know he loves the highways/motorways.. : )

I just did a drive of about 1400km when I picked up my new 1970 '02, and since I had not seen the car prior to picking it up, I took a decent set of tools and spares. If your car has been performing fine on local drives, you shoul probably be good to go. Just in case, here's the list of things I took:

alternator belt

fuses

set of points

condenser

fuel filter

hose clamps

assorted bolts & nuts

extra oil

a few feet of fuel line

a few feet of electrical wire

a few feet of baling wire

electrical tape

water can

gas can with a few spare gallons

flashlight

standard screwdrivers

philips screwdrivers

cresent wrench

vise grips

small hammer

gasket sealer

set of spark plugs

distributor cap

distributor rotor

light bulbs

JB Weld 2 part epoxy - quick setting

80 grit sand paper

duct tape

nylon wire ties

bungee cord

pocket knife

wire strippers

electrical connectors

wrenches

sockets

spare thermostat

hehehe... most of that stuff fits in a small duffel bag! Keep in mind that, in the end, it was my mother-in-law's AAA card that got me home. The ground strap on the alternator was a goner, draining the battery about 150km from home, so I got a flatbed tow the rest of the way :)

sort, one of the cheap ones under 30 bucks, and a pair of jackstands and wheel-chocks. Also some teflon tape for sealing things if necessary. Check your spare and bring a tire-plugging kit, small air-compressor, tire-guage, proper lugnuts for the wheels and the spare, and a torque-wrench. Flashlights, troublelight that clips to the battery, orange warning cone or safety triangle.

Carry some trans trans gear-oil, rear-end gear-oil and a pump for the oil too. One time I was running from L.A. to Seattle in my '74 2002 and I had just gassed in Grants Pass, Oregon, heading north when all of a sudden my speedometer stopped working. A moment later there was a ton of smoke coming from the car. I stopped and found that the speedo-cable lockbolt on the tranny had come out and was lost, blowing tranny oil all over the bottom of the car causing the smoking. I found that the lockbolt threads were stripped on the trans, and I had to wrap a smaller bolt with teflon tape to seal it. I drove off the freeway and used the floorjack and stands to work on it, and put the tranny fluid in with a pump and I was back on the road in fifteen minutes.

Be prepared for the most ridiculous problems.

Hey, sounds like you are coming down our way :) We are about an hour south of the port stephens area, in newcastle. There is a state round hillclimb this weekend at bulahdelah too, just thought I'd mention it. Clip here of some fool running in a wrx. (seriously, I have no idea who, but he does do it 5 seconds faster than I did it...) http://www.premium.net.au/Stuff/Hillclimb.wmv 5.3mb. Might go and have a look on sunday...

Anyhoo, all the best with your trip

a spare alternator

spare waterpump

couple of fuel lines

various hose clamps

couple of generic rad hoses

duct tape

small spool of insulated elec wire

spare alt belt

fuel filter

gerry can with some fuel

oil

coolant

my toolbox

check the spare tire

Why check the guibo? Is it prone to go if it has some cracks in the rubber? Fuel pump on a tii is really expensive.. I should probably just get a spare as well.

Planning my trip to San Fran fro Toronto, and up the west coast mid Oct. +/-8000km wee hoo can't wait!!

Round trip approx. 4,500 miles. I had an extra water pump, fuel pump, thermostadt, coolant hoses, spark plugs, oil filter, bulbs, and fuses. I ended up changing the thermostadt in the middle of nowwhere Kansas at a rest stop with the help of the guys with the One Lap 02. Next time I do a 1000+ mile trip I'm taking a spare alternator and starter also.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
