+74 Grille (Fasteners)

Can someone please post up an image of the screws (fasteners) that hold the +74 grilles in place to the nose as well as what they screw into - there are four square openings in the sheet metal of the nose, so there must be some sort of insert that goes into that square hole.  Thank you

But in addition to the outboard finger nuts, each grill has 4 black oxide(?) screws that attach to plastic anchors. I know the screws are NLA and an exact match is not readily available -- it's some odd size like #3.9 -- but I seem to recall the plastic anchors as still available. The round taillight cars, I believe, use the same size screws but they are bright zinc plated.

(In the attached photo, the 2 horn supports and the 8 grill attachment tabs were originally painted black on square taillight cars -- sloppily, generally by brush, over the original body color -- but my car's nosepiece was replaced ca. 1978 and I haven't gotten around to "correcting" this detail!)

Even though I have my '75 entered into RealOEM and bmwfans.info as my car of choice it still shows the grilles of the Roundie cars, not the grilles from the later square light cars.

What you need are some square plastic inserts that go in the square holes and receive the tapered screws that go thru the grille and into the above mentioned inserts.  If you have a BMW dealership with a parts guy willing to look them up they can get them for you.  Unfortunately, I do not have P/Ns for you, because the above webs don't show them.

Walloth & Nesch (in Germany) had them on sale recently, so you might check with them.  Shipping on the 8 inserts and screws should not be to prohibitive from Germany, as the items are small.

Might also give Steve (blunttech.com) a call as he can probably get them for you.  (Steve is a member of this board and is very helpful at supplying parts for us).

I don't think those square plastic inserts are available anymore according to Blunt. I ordered what I thought was going to be the plastic inserts from Walloth and Nesch and they sent me metal clips with screws to go with them that slip over the end of the bracket and accomplish the same thing. Maybe you can pirate some out of a parts car if you want to stay original. The hooks that go at the end of the grills are available new with the round plastic nut from BMW or Blunt. I like the way they pull the ends of the grill in tight to the car. A nice finishing touch. It's all in the details.

There is a new P/N listed by one online BMW Dealer, but I don't know if it's the OE plastic insert or not.

Anyway, the new P/N is  51 71 1 874 203.  The sale from Walloth & Nesch showed a picture with the plastic inserts, so maybe they are still available, or have been re-produced.

Looks like some clarifying is in order:

Each side grille is secured to the nose with (4) screws and one J-hook assembly. The J-hook pulls the outer corner tight to the fender. Plastic grills use square nylon inserts for the screws, aluminum grills use capture type clips.

That I know of, the horn and grill brackets were never painted black. This is my '76 with factory paint (and missing plastic insert  )

Followup to Roadhog's post...

At least on roundies, the hood support/horn mount brackets and the little tabs that hold the grill screw J-clips were all painted a semi-gloss black by the factory--with a brush!  Both my cars were done that way and were original.

Not completely sure about squarelights--I have seen some done the same way--but there are plenty of original squarelights on the board for folks to check...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
