Suggestion for the board at large re: Leif's accident...

Recognizing our gratefulness that a member of the '02 community survived such a potentially devastating wreck; and recognizing that Leif's "beater," the 1976 2002 with VIN 2482248 formerly owned by Rob Herdman, also protected its occupants in two less severe accidents before the collision that ended its usable career, I propose the creation of a new award among the 2002 FAQ community.

This award, the "2482248 Award," shall be given by any board member to any other board member who shows self-sacrificial aid to another '02 enthusiast. It may be bestowed simply by making a post announcing the recipient and relating the circumstances of the award. I would also propose that a photo of Leif's accident be hosted on a page of this site, with an explanation of the reason for naming the award and with the names of recipients posted below.

It seems to me that this would be one small way to honor the spirit of service that has always been a part of the 2002 community and that is exemplified, to the best extent possible by an inanimate object, in the sacrifice of 2482248.

What do you think? Sappy, I know, but these cars got soul!

As my newest waits to go to the crusher, perhaps we should extend the award to the remembrance of parts cars as well? One parts car can benefit MANY another car.

That car gave it's life to soooo many other 02's. Both my 02's have some of it's parts, Zenon's 73 has the trans, Michael Aeberhardt's 76 has a strut housing, Trevor's tii has the steering column....the list could go on to include all the parts that got sold through the FAQ, and on eBay, to as far away as Brazil, and the UK.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
