PO says this color is Maisgelb. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone have an 02 this color? I'm really starting to like it. The car needs a little tlc, but its nice to have an early sunroof 02 again.

I've never seen maisgelb on a car, but I'm assuming its paler and more soft/pastel than golf - I was under the impression it was a 1600 cabrio-only color. I would keep it that way as it's a pretty rare color, although it might be tricky to match out for a repaint if the car already was repainted (as I found with florida). Polish an area and see how it shines up.

And, I just might have my newly improved florida 1600 back this afternoon.

Original color was Sahara - still has Sahara sticker under the hood. Under-hood and trunk areas were not painted. I noticed the same thing about Maisgelb only being used on a limited number of 02s - cabrios and Baur/targas too, I think. You're right on the mark about the color, a softer shade of Golf (another of my favorites). I'll probably keep it this color, so you don't have to worry about another Florida 02 showing up at an event! I polished some of the hood and it looks a bit brighter. There are some scuffs, dings and scratches, but not too bad so I'll probably leave the paint alone. It has that nice "lived in" look. And I won't have to worry about where I park it.

Glad to hear you're getting your 1600 back. How did the work turn out?

The metal work looked great. We were able to get all the parts, including the 1600 grilles. It is nice to have a brand new-never rusted nose. The florida mixture needed some tweaks to match out, but the paint should be smoother and with better depth than what was on the car, it will be blended back to the quarter panels, and the engine compartment is getting repainted up to the firewall. The shop is color sanding the areas they aren't painting. Hoping to get it today or monday.

Not sure how that would work though, since it looks like the Anco bar would be in the way of any lights mounted on the bumper. Hmmmm...

Oh, and the overrider bar is supposed to help protect the nose... LOL! Its all just tinfoil in a world dominated by 4x4s and SUVs.

Do you happen to have a USED pass side trim piece you would part with? I'll gladly drop by this weekend if you do. See the link regarding the color. It is most certainly not Manilla or Tampico but could be Condorgelb instead (or a faded and really bad match for Golf). The sticker says Sahara, which was the original color, so no help there...

i used to have a Manila '02 and the color's name says it all. Just go to your nearest office supply and pick out a manila folder. That's the exact color.

I have one or two pics of it. will try to scan them soon and post them.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
