i have a koni setup, he said he couldnt feel the difference for every day driving. 

what this tells me is that the kyb's are perfect for him.  if he can't tell the difference between good dampers and cheap stuff when using the car for his intent, then there is no reason to spend more on the good stuff.... :)

not every car is a race car and needs coilovers or the best suspension. These shocks will last him well worth his 200$ and his ride will be comfortable. A lot of guys dont want coilovers on a daily driven car, not everyone wants to feel every little pebble on the road while driving.

 

I personally prefer coilovers, but nothing wrong with some shocks and springs and you can still do some spirited driving, maybe not corner hugging track racing, but hopefully you arent doing that on the street anyway. 

nobody said every car needs to drive like a race car, and BTW, every 2002 comes stock from the factory with "coilovers" in the front.  a mcpherson strut by definition is a coilover (coil spring wrapped around (over) the damper)

 

back to intended use.  adjustable spring perch coil on damper suspensions have nothing to do with the dampers inside them.  dampers are about how that spring movement is controlled.  some dampers work well with soft springs, some better with stiff springs.  different manufacturers have different compression and rebound rates.  and the quality of the construction affects how well they work and how long they maintain consistent damping properties.

 

concur with andrew on the rear compression damping on the kyb's.  they are harder than billy hd's from my basic testing.

The struts in the pictures are not for a 2002.

A KYB Gas-A-Just is stiff as hell. GR2, not so much. Either way, nowhere near the precision damping / rebound of a Bilstein HD. In terms of durability, however, KYB is significantly better than most value priced name brands.

I dunno.  I like gas-a-justs for what they are, and they DO last ok.

 

GR2's, I've never used.

 

Koni str-t's are ok, too.

 

Those things in the picture?  Not  2002 application.

I've still got a set of vintage Gas-A-Just shocks and strut inserts under the '81 Corolla I've owned for 31 years. The suspension has been under the car for at least 28 years and works okay.

Budweiser...It's not just for breakfast anymore.

My experience with KYBs was some years ago--replaced the front strut inserts on my '69 with KYBs....they were pretty well gone at less than 40k miles.  Replaced the KYBs with Bilsteins and they're still on the car nearly 20 years later.  I put a pair of de Carbon gas rear shocks on the '69 in 1974...and they're still going strong. 

 

De Carbon invented the gas shock--and licensed production to a German outfit named Bilstein.  

 

The Bilstein insterts on my '73 are going strong at 160k...and don't feel any softer than the Bilsteins on my '69 with 50k on 'em.

 

Bottom line, if you're gonna keep the car for awhile, get Konis or Bilsteins.

Go with  Boge, I love them. It is the perfect match with H&R sport springs, lowered the rear a little more than I liked  so I added 3/4" poly spacers (custom made for me, but I can have them made if there is interest for a little cash) on the top of the factory spacers to clear the center-exit exhaust from scraping on bad roads. Ride and handling is unbelievable but I also replaced all the rubber and added poly sway bushings with custom end links I made myself (stock sway  bars). I hate Bilsteins, they belong to a truck. KYBs are shit as well. I never had Konis, too much for my wallet. So there....

I bought a NOS set of Boge front sport inserts from Bill (Formerly of AL, now residing in Memphis) on the FAQ for sale page a few years ago. Apparently Sachs / Boge no longer manufactures the front strut insert for the '02. They still offer the rear shock. I just tried to find some fronts within the last couple of weeks. No longer a listing in the Sachs catalog and my local BMW dealer punched the number in for me and it came up NLA.
