I was wondering how many 2002s are believed to be in the USA either running or under restoration. Anyone want to take a guess?? I would think that after all the 02 festivities last year that many people were inspired to purchase an 02 or take up an 02 project. Best regards.

These are running or restorable 02's, do a little

math and account for the fact that I seem to own

half of those and you get nearly 10,000 still around

in the US. (Or 10%) that's my educated guess.

than anywhere else in world, including( especially Germany). for 02 Fest West 2002, i think 170 02s were there, round that, in May 2003, palo alto Bay area Swap Meet 2003, 110 cars, +/-: And this is just cars determined to / know about these shows. Lots of 02s around here oblivious to boards, tuners, etc. extrapolate from what i have seen in my most scientific way.... add in secret multiplier= 8,563 02s in USA. period. like jelly beans in a jar we cannot see....lol.

and saw close to 300 down in SC last year for 02-02-02, so I know there's at least that many left here on the east coast. That is probably about it however...I just don't see them driving around as much as I used to ten years ago. I actually haven't seen a single one driving down the road at all this year. Saw only one other one driving around last year. The salt is taking its toll.

which would include Santa Barbara to San Diego, we've got more '02s than you do, as we have a lot more cars and people than you. NorCal might have the lead in heap-hippie '02s though. Don't think the '02s in SLO were only from Northern Cal. I'm sure as a state California has more than any other state or country.

that I picked-up years ago from somewhere. I think the concentration of 02s in Nor Cal is due, in large part, to the availablity of parts and wrenches to put those parts on the cars. The climate is not bad either- makes non-a.c. cars tolerable. Certainly, no snobbery meant with the statistic: I am just grateful that there are parts available and friends who are experts on how it all goes together, especially after modification. Mkaes it possible to have an 02 as my only car and daily driver for 7 years( until i got another 02).

I always thought the number was fairly low on the remaining 02s but I've run across some "secret" stashes over the years. I know of one stash of 8-9 02s that are holed up in a garage and also a local doctor that has/had 5 at one time but was relatively unknown. I've also run across a few people over the years that "still have one in the garage" left over from an earlier period in their lives but did't drive it anymore. Just my WAG, but I think there are 12-15 02s for every one you see on the road or at club events. This probably puts the number at around 10,000-15,000 cars in the US. I have no clue about the rest of the world. Also, FWIW, I recently heard of a local guy that reportedly has an Isetta stashed away in his shed. And you'd never in a million years guess that he had one of those (he drives a Ford Focus around town). Hopefully, I'll get a peek one of these days...

believed him! lol. actually, i have heard that stat from several different mechanics in the bay area who have been bmw guys for 20 plus years. maybe there was a time when dmv stats were more specific, or maybe bmw na/world h.q. got some info. It may be rubbish... but it is cool rubbish and it kinda makes sense to me especially because i see so many 02s in san francisco all the time and different ones, and i see them on the road almost every day as random sightings.modern bmws are thick as flys around here- they are one of the most common cars in sfo. weird- i go to other parts of the country and can go for weeks without seeing a bmw of any variety.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
