According to my 1972 and 1978 paper ETKs the chrome hinges were changed to black at these VINs on US spec cars:

1602: 1 572 931

2002: 2 572 070

Headrests were changed from the old style with 10mm rods

to the newer style with 12mm rods and the "ears"

according to ETK for US spec cars at these VINs:

- 2002: 2 588 022

- 2002 automatic: 2 533 760

- 2002tii: 2 763 352

I don´t know if that is 100% true as I have found not a small number of mistakes already in the early releases of the ETK (not to speak of the actual digitized ones).

Regards, Lars.

Just trying to capture some data.

1.) In 1974, I bought and parted the t-boned VIN 2762204, a 1972 model year tii (Colorado) manufactured July 10, 1972. I still have a few parts around -- for a future project, of course! -- including the passenger's front seat. Two years old and with 28,000 miles on it at the time of its demo, and stored in my basement for 40 years, the chances of this seat having been replaced are quite thin, so here it is, 2762204's front passenger seat (first 2 photos)!

Chrome hinges, small (10mm.) supports, chrome support escutcheons, no "ears" on the headrest.

2.) The third photo below is of the drivers seat from VIN 2762639, an early 1973 model year tii (Polaris) manufactured October 10th, 1972. I believe, but cannot absolutely verify, that this seat is original to this car. The navy blue vinyl is consistent with a Polaris car. And the condition -- very poor -- is consistent with the condition of the car in general -- very poor!

Black hinges, small (10mm.) supports, no "ears" on the headrest.

3.) The fourth photo below is of the passenger seat from VIN 2762757, a 1973 model year tii (Inka) manufactured October 19, 1972. I believe, but cannot absolutely verify, that this seat is original to this car. The black vinyl is consistent with an Inka car. The tired but fairly good condition are consistent with the remainder of the car, a 126,000-mile example.

Black hinges, small (10mm.) supports, no "ears" in the headrest.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
