Baddest 02 Ever?

Fred,

the Schnitzer car is (or at least was) standing at Schnitzer Motorsport in Freilassing, Germany. That is also were the pictures you posted were taken.

My friend Wolfgang was there some years ago and took these photos. Somehow he managed to get them taking off the hood for him. I´m not 100% sure but he knows Charly Lamm from the old days somehow when they were racing against each other in Formula 3 or so. But maybe I confuse that with Marc Surer ... anyway: He knows Charly from somewhere and had him order an employee to take the hood off the car.

1,4 Liter Schnitzer 20-4 turbo inside. 1,4 because of the conversion formula between naturally aspirated and turbocharged cars, they wanted to compete in the 2 Liter class with it. According to the book on Schnitzer´s history "Die Meistermacher" they started at about 360hp with the engine and got up to about 560hp in 1979 (then mounted in E21 of course).

The Hans-Jochen Zychlinski (Zynki) car is a street car. Some (or maybe many) people doubt the power output he claims, personally I don´t know what to really think about it. Besides those doubts he´s for sure an a bit complicated person especially if his social habits are considered.

Regards, Lars.

Disagree with previous posts. The "baddest" 1600/2002 was Joe Bill Dryden's 68 1600ti that had a M6 S38 motor conversion that was built for Joe by Ray Korman. Joe was killed in 1993 when he ejected from his F-16 at low altitude. There is a feature on this 1600 in the April or May 93 Roundel.  Joe had bought the 1600 many a year ago while stationed in Germany back in the 70's. He brought it back to the states and upgraded it for speed like all fighter pilots do with the help of Ray Korman.. Shortly after the Roundel article came out, Dryden was killed after he ejected from his F-16 at low altitude. After his death, his family put the car for sale in the Roundel classifieds.  I heard that this 1600 was downright scary, change your underwear on the spot fast. If you know someone who has old Roundel's, check out the article. I've got it buried in my archives somewhere.

I did a quick websearch and found this post on a F-16 website on 27 MAR 2010 says that Danny Myers was wrenching on Dryden's former 1600. Anyone know Danny Myers?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
