Good for you! I get pissed off just about every month with something in the Roundel. But to be honest, I just don't care enough to write. IMO, its become mostly just another pile of new car fluff on par with the other mainstream mags. And I think that Robson's attitude is probably an accurate representation of most new BMW owners' views on older Bimmers.

I say 'good for BMW' for knowing and catering to their target market. Its good for their bottom line and after the lean times of the '60s, its good to keep the money coming in. But new BMW owners just aren't people that I associate with very often. No new BMWs in my neighborhood... I'm just not the target demographic.

Also, some people are just "vintage oriented" while others aren't. Some people want a new toaster and others are happy with the one they have. Its not always about money, but it does reflect something about our values.

FWIW, I drive my cruise control, CD/radio, ABS, AWD Subaru toaster most days but I drive my noisy, no radio, listen to the engine tii on days when I really want to look at the scenery and take note of where I am in life.

Drive on!

Karl

Nothing more than my 2L of almost stockness...

Not much at bmw that makes me get a woody to go new.. a pontiac GTP can out accelerate most of the bmw fleet... and lets face it... most people don't have moutainous roads to drive into work all that curves and crap.. it's alot of boring highway city driving which straight line acceleration is more usefull but alas BMW turned it's back on performance a long time ago.. what used to be "the ultimate driving machine" has now turned into the ultimate yuppy machine.. even the newest m3... 333HP is all they could do with all that vanos crap on 3.2L.. if honda had it they'd have 400 HP out of the same mill using old skool vtec... please don't come back with the m5 being so massive.. m5 is nice but for it's price it better hustle.. 71k for a 5L DOHC v8 394 HP.. WEAK! cmon vetts push that with 5.7L's on a 2v pushrod setup!

He called Bacchus boring???? I have a mission! I''ll write a

reply to Roundel. Fact is that most of us can almost drive

anything (except the z8) if we really want it, it really isn't

about the money of the status, our cars are just great cars!

. . . if I could, I would get a better 2002! And I realize many of you guys DO own newer/faster cars, and prefer the passion of the 02's. What's the split on daily drivers/weekend warriors?

(However, the nice ATL '80 528i for $2200 in the Roundel classifieds did tempt me a bit. . . don't tell Crusty)

both guys sound like real douchebags, i was under the assumption that if you're into BMW's for some illusory "image" you at LEAST didnt ADMIT TO IT, no shame? Just the same, i dont think it's anything to get riled up over, every community has it's morons. . . and i suppose if the guy thinks the 02 is ugly, i dont fault him for it, that's just preference i guess.

...brought us "innovative" and "attractive" designs from whom? Merecedes? Toyota? Datsun? Ford of England or Germany? Borgward? Hillman? British Leyland? Rover? Simca? Peugot? Renault? NSU?

Not much to look at in that group.

This guy needs to put his beer down and do a little research.

I got 50 cents that says he's never driven a 2002. If he did, he wouldn't be so caught up in how it looks or how he looks in it.

My 2 cents...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
