Tii Gas Tank Question

Recommended Posts

The gas tank from my '74 tii project is completely gummed up (2" of tar like stuff), but generally rust free other than some surface stuff.

However, the tank is missing the pick-up tube, aka "suction device" with sender, and whatever I need to attach the return gas line to the tank.  It does not appear that the suction device is available anymore new.

I am trying to figure out what other tanks would be interchangeable if I find a used one (with suction device, etc.).  Based on my reading, it has to be a tii tank?  And in '72, the suction device mount was different?

So, am I limited to a '73 or '74 tii tank?

I believe if you change to an in-tank E30 318i fuel pump/sender combination, you could use a standard 2002 gas tank. The E30 pump assembly has the fuel outlet pipe - you will need a tank that as a metal pipe for the fuel return hose.

to clarify what Jim said...

later normal 02 tanks had a return pipe built into top of tank, so you can use any E30 high pressure in tank pump with it.

earlier tanks did not have return built in..need to use E30 318is intank high pressure pump with these as it has a return built into the pump.

or you can use the low pressure intank/high pressure external pump combo found in early E30's in any normal 02 tank. the LP intank pump has a return built into it.

A good radiator shop should be able to boil out your original tank and get it good and clean inside.  Failing that, I think Eastwood Corp makes a cleaning solution for gas tanks--you pour the stuff in and let it sit, then flush it out.

I managed to clean a pretty gnarly gas tank by pouring in several quarts of kerosene and a double handful of sharp gravel (!), letting it soak for a day or two, then sloshed it around for 10-15 minutes.  The gravel loosened up all the crud in the tank and cleaned it nicely.  Just be sure and get all the gravel out before you use the tank!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
