what is involved with changing gear selector shafts???

I have a nice fourspeed I was planning on using, found out it has the early short selector shaft. Is it an easy swap to put in a selector shaft from my junk tranny, or is it a major operation? Maybe it won't even fit?

Thanks to anyone who has knowledge of this area.

room to work though. The shift selector shaft at the tranny is the same for the all tranny's. Pull the pin where the shift selector shaft connects to the shift lever and swap the entire collar/rod/shift lever out and you're good to go.

not the external shifter stuff. It only sticks out about 1/2" past the oil seal. That puts the collar part right where the guibo is, and it doesn't clear. I believe it is a really early trans, made to go with the earlyest smaller diameter six hole guibo, perhaps from an early 1600. I was considering putting the longer selector shaft from a later 2002 trans in it.

together. You want the nuts on the side facing the tranny. That way if shit happens and the nut comes off, the bolt won't work itself out and resculpt the rear of the tranny.

the guibo itself hits the collar on the shift shaft, because the one coming out from the trans is too short. I think I am onto plan B now anyway. Thanks.

you are correct tom with your information - that is an early trans. from a 1600-2 with the 6 hole flex coupling. The parts book shows only the short shaft for the 1600. Perhaps the new ETK shows a different number? I can't get mine to open up right now. If someone can cross reference the parts and part numbers for you, that will get you closer to an answer. If not, then all we can do is get in there and tear one apart and compare parts. Good luck!
