I am in the middle of cylinder head overhaul and I am wondering if I should replace rockers, rocker shafts and valve springs, (along with new ex. and in. valves, guides and seals) if the ones I have look decent. I just do not want to re-do the job in a few thousand miles to replace these parts and say to myself I should have done it at first time..Since I am doing the job myself, I do not really mind to spend a little money for these new parts but if it is totally unnecessary, I could use the money for something else..

1. Rocker arms for wear on the shaft journal (remember, early engines prior to mid-1970 have unbushed rocker arms that wear the shafts)and on the pads that contact the valves. Also check 'em for cracks due to overtightening the adjuster nut/bolt

2. Shafts for wear where the rocker arms bear on 'em (see parenthetical remark above re the unbushed arms)

3. Replace the valve springs regardless--false economy to reuse unless they are very low mileage

4. Replace the rocker arm locating springs, clips etc. Cheap and failure can cause big problems.

So long as you know the engine's provenence--it hasn't been badly abused, overreved, overheated etc and the measurements on rockers and shafts check out, and you're not going to do any heavy combat with the car you're probably safe to re-use. But don't reuse anything marginal...MHO

Took engine block and cylinder head to a machine shop an hour ago. They said that the cylinder head is cracked and no good.. So I am going to try to find an used one - e21 2.0.. I found a junkyard that has one for $150 and I have no clue how good condition it is in..I have not seen it yet. Think $150 is O.K if in decent condition?

And also the machine shop will charge $50 to inspect and mill(ream?) the cylinder walls .005 off and $50 to mill top and $40 to polish crankshaft.. What do you think? It seems to a lot to me?

I just went through this process, and $150 seems to be the standard junkyard price for a used head. Just assume that it will need to be rebuilt. They should definately give you a gaurantee that the head is not cracked and not warped. If they wont' do that then go to another place. Also if your willing and have patience, watch fleabay. You can usually pick one up for cheaper, but realize the shipping is $40-50 in the US.
