Don't try this at home kids . . .

So I was working on the car late last night, trying to get the timing set (again) after having screwed with a perfectly good setup. . .

So it seems I left a nice oily shop rag on the exhaust manifold. . .

Driving around, "what's that awful smell". . "wait why is there so much smoke coming from the engine". . .

"Shit, the rag's on fire. . ."

Fortunately the only damage seems to be the spark plug wires (they'll burn you know), the wire and hose to the windshiel washer, and my pride.

I've given myself a couple dope-slaps, so you don't need to bother. . . I think its time to buy that Halon fire extinguisher I've been putting off. . .

Cheers!

I lost one of my nicest sports car due to fire, some

oil fell on the exhaust manifold and in 10 minutes

the engine compartment was toasted.

This one was a 89 Voyager, 2.2 liter, 5sp, short

wheel base, minimum interior. It really kicked ass,

very practical and fun to drive, I am serious!

I just got a beautiful Halotron unit from MoonEyes in Santa FE Springs, CA. Their # is 800 547-5422.

The units are chromed and come with very trick aluminum brackets. You can get them in 3 sizes (1 1/2 lbs, 2 1/2 lbs, and 5 lbs) and can choose ABC powder (yuck!), Halon, or Halotron (the new replacement for Halon). They also have roll cage brackets.

I personally think anyone with an '02 (particularly a tii!) should have an extinguisher and I am a doofus for having waited so long! The final straw was a hose clamp failure that popped the fuel line off the filter and spewed gas all over the place...I got off lucky!

Best,

Coop

It had a bracket under the front seat for a fire extinguisher but no bottle. It didn't take me long to go and get one at the hardware store. It's a $20 insurance policy.

It was a comfort on last summer's trip to O'Fest. Not just for me but the other two tiis in my caravan.

My Dad told me that if you can't exit the car with the fire bottle in your hand, it's worthless.

set up that is cheap and easy to do. Home Despot sells mount brackets with quick release hold for the typical ABC fire chemical extinguisher( typical size: wait... 13 1/2 inches tall x 3 1/2 inch diameter ( just measured kitchen ext.) made by Kidde. I mounted 1 of my extinguishers to the recaro seat adapter bracket with just drilling small holes and using self-tap metal screw to attach ext. mount to the front of the seat bracket. It is not in the way ever, and it is easy to access fast. going to replace the ABC with Halon asap ( expensive!)so i dont have to go through cleaning process from residue of chemical ext. if i have to use it. i was taught a long time ago that an extinguisher is useless unless you can access it while you are upside down and hanging in the harness and in the dark( add creeping water to scenerio for pure agony). i also have a second ex. in the trunk cuz they only last about 12 seconds best with the size i use in the car. i see extinguisher mounts that a driver cannot reach from driver's seat and hope they never have the worst case scenerio. or always have a conscious pax to hand it to them.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
