a guy and i at work have been throwing around ideas ... terbo m10, "i-ized" eta (325i head and rods on eta 2.7 crank, etc), and this morning pretty much decided that the real only balls-out way to set up an 02 for power AND handling is to install a lightweight rotary motor. anyone ever heard of someone doing this? two-rotor twin terbos can make about 450hp and are light as hell!

A rotary '02 has been done, I've seen pictures. The owner said the conversion wasn't very hard b/c of the rotary's relatively compact profile. Of course it involved completely custom engine mounts, and I belive the car had a rack & pinion. There was some discussion about it a year or two back on the toadfly board. The links to the pictures might even still work.

A body is just a body--ask any hotrodder with a plasma torch and a case of beer.

There is a Lotus 7/Mazda rotary kit car called the Rotus 7 that was made in Canada, and it was a rocket.

Saw a Mazda Miata engine and trans fitted to an MGBGT at a show recently. Seems pretty straightforward.

Other four cylinder engines will fit, too. Olds Quad four, for example. The HO version has 190hp. There is an adapter kit to make it run north/south in the chassis available from Mantapart.

Two weeks a go I rode in a Sunbeam Alpine with a 2-litre Fiat engine and transmission. The entire wiring harness including gauges was swapped along with it. Went like stink.

The rotary engine in a 2002 could be mounted really low and and behind the front subframe to significantly aid the center of gravity and fron/rear weight distribution. Might make that E21 rack and pinion steering fit easier, too. Twin Turbo and accompanying plumbing from the most recent model RX7 shouldn't be a problem. There's plenty of room. A/C? Why not?

Park the donor car next to the 2002 and get going!

Here in NZ there is a thriving streetracing scene (boy-racers). It's become quite common to see e30's with rotary's in them.

We refer to it as 'bastardizing the bemmer.'

Rotorys have a huge cult following over here.

The biggest down side most powerful rotoary converions have is the horrible noise. wank-wank-wank-wank-wank.

We call them the wankel-rotary.

But an 02 conversion with a decent exhaust would make for a formidable car. A good rotary can be extremely powerful. I say go for it.

There's a local guy who has/had an 02/rotary monster. He would autox it back about 10 years ago when I was involved in that scene. It was completely stripped with some huge (probably 12-15" wide) tires. Sure, it was quick, but I never could reconcile the rotary NOISE coming from an 02... and he kept hitting cones with those monster tires. Quite an abomination, IMO. I can understand the appeal but I wouldn't want one myself. When I'm ready for something light and fast with four wheels, I'll go get a Lotus/Caterham/Birkin Seven.

just do it and have fun blowing the basic petroleum

compound out of the rotary seals.

You could argue on the level of "blashpemy" for the

rest of your life, into the lives of the next Rob's life,

and until all of our 27 plus year old cars rot away.

Then all you'll be doing is arguing and not driving

or building your car.

Wherever you go you can find new reasons

connected to why putting a (ex.) rotary engine, the

non-original number matching m10 engine, or

some aftermarket part is whatever it is. The way I

see it is complex and I'm tired of talking about

something that other people will get to saying

anyways, so... WHO CARES?

Well, another option is one of those little turbines like Jay Leno's bike. Don't know how it stacks up against the twin turbo. Either way, you'll have to beef up the power train or you will break gearboxes, u-joins and differentials. Also don't forget the more go needs more stop. Upgrade the brakes. And that trailing link rear suspension will show its weaknesses when you start using it in a supercar, so you'll have to do something about that too.

By the time your done, you would have done better to just go buy a Ferrari.

I orginally bought my 74 MGB with a rotary conversion in mind. I was talked out of it. If someone come up with the engine I can donate the body heh heh
