I bought a 320i and taking the tranny and diff out of it. Now the driveshaft in the 320i is what I want to use. Now my question is, Is it the 320i driveshaft that gets shortend 3.6in or the 2002's driveshaft?

See the 320i is a 3 bolt driveshaft, so it should be easer to just shorten that one than the 02's

is correct if you're transplanting the 4 bolt output flange from your 4-speed onto the 5-speed.

The 6 bolt guibo is thinner than the 8 bolt flavor so you need to make the drive shaft correspondenging longer.

The easiest method is to purchase one that is already shortened. You're going to need to purchase transmission mounts anyway.

I bought a shortened driveline and bolt-in mounts from Dave Varco (http://www.2002parts.com/). Great guy, great prices, worth your support.

When you're doing the job, don't forget a new clutch slave, TO bearing and pilot bearing. If you have any doubts about the clutch disk, replace it too. You don't want to R&R that tranny more than once.

If you're not feeling lucky, replace the seal on the output flange of tranny too.

Cheers!!

once with a five speed conversion, is a pinched brake line in the tranny tunnel. It seems the 5 speed has to be moved up and to the drivers side to line up correctly. When that is the case, the tranny rubs the brake line that runs to the rear, and as they say, "if it rubs, it will rub through". So watch that line closely.

of the 320 driveshaft mated to the rear section of the 02 driveshaft--it'll have to be balanced of course. That way you can use the six bolt 320 guibo which is supposed to be stronger than the original 02 8 bolt unit.

Good luck--one of these days I'll get around to using the five speed and driveshafts that have been inhabiting my garage the past couple of years.

Cheers

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
