Foxy

Recommended Posts

I just picked up this 74 tii and im unfamiliar with these engine but I know something needs to go here.  It appears as though it is the air intake? i recently saw someone running a CAI from there, where could I purchase one of those?  This part also was in a box that came with the car, where would it go?

That extra part is a Weber 2 barrel downdraft carburetor.  The tii has a fuel injection system.  The carb and fuel injection system are mutually exclusive.  In other words, it's not of much use to you unless you convert your motor to carburetion.

Yes, the air intake goes on open cylinder.  You could use a K&N air filter, but you'll catch all sorts of flack on this forum for doing so.  To each his own.

I'm curious about your avatar photo.  It appears to be a dual cam head.  Do you have one of those on your car?  If so, it's total crap.  I'll offer you a real tii head in exchange for that crappy dual cam head ;-)

That sir, would be an m42 without its valve cover (:

Just kidding about the head, by the way.  If it had actually been a dual cam head on an M10 block, it would likely have been worth far more than the rest of your car.

If your tii is currently running well, you're laughing.  If not, there are a few guides you'll want to study in order to start sorting out running issues.  One of them is the tii tuning manual, which you can find here: http://www.2002tii.org/kb/59

Here's a tii air filter housing on eBay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/230891878528?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Your car is lacking the two welded-on brackets that extend from the driver's side inner fender and support the housing. I also suspect that the standard (non-tii) brake booster on your car would interfere with the stock air filter housing if you added the welded-on brackets. As has been said, the K&N is a good answer given your car's facts, at least short term.

jgerock,

original you say ??  HMMM, I've only got 3 of those round relay thingies near the master cylinder.  I do not have the relay directly adjacent to the master cylinder.  There is space on the bracket, but no relay installed.

On the right side front I see 2 rubber hoses to the right of the radiator, I don't have those hoses.  Is your 4th relay perhaps related to whatever those attach to ??

And no way is your config truly original unless you've still got some of the original dirt (which I know I do).  Yours is magnificently too clean !!

Cheers,

Carl

The extra relay, 99 out of a hundred times, is for fog or driving lights.

Here's my '76's relay rack (the left-most relay is for my fog-lamps, added after new-car delivery).

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
