Hey guys, this will be my first trip to the Vintage.  Was wondering if you guys could talk about the "Der Vintage Rally" that takes place on Friday.  Good?  Bad?

I'm hoping to pull into town early that Friday morning.

usually very low key tour through some NC backroads. if you are there, worth doing as it looks like there is nothing else to do this year on friday (they had and auto-x last year, and we all went to a drag strip the year before).

a pile of us leave from DC area thursday morning. one convoy goes down 81, the other down 95. the party starts at the hotel thursday afternoon. join us!

Thanks for the info.  I've registered for the rally!  Unfortunately I won't make it down until late Thursday night.  Will update if anything changes.

I'll also be dropping the wife and kids off at Grandma's so that means I'll be towing the 1600 to Martinsville, VA.  The only problem with that is I don't have a big effin' diesel like you!

My Jeep with have to do the trick!  Slow and steady!  She's done it before.

Tim - Route 29 is a terrific route if you want some scenery - just watch out for hidden police vehicles in the medians.  A bunch of us used to convoy that route - some are still taking that route as an alternative to 81 and 95.  I think we had 13 cars in the 2009 caravan.

Scott Sturdy should be announcing additional information regarding convoys using the Registration "dashboard" website in the coming months.  I think John McWilliams (Chamonix 74tii owner) usually prefers Route 29.

  • 3 months later...

I highly recommend the rally.  Jay Swift was my co-driver in 2011.  We earned the ignoble award for arriving early at every checkpoint during the rally.  Jay and I had interpreted "Time-Speed-Distance Rally" as "the car with the lowest time, highest speed, and same or greater distance wins".  We passed 3 cars in the morning stage, and a few more in the afternoon.  Had a great time.  The route took some winding, scenic country roads, which were ideal for hooning.

Caution: the 2011 rally route didn't feature a single gas station during the morning session, and we ended up trying to hypermile my 2002 for about half an hour, and arrived at a gas station on fumes.  The only gas station within driving distance at the time had 87 and 89 octane, so I added a bottle or two of octane booster.

I'm in!  What time late morning?  I'd like to get to WS before it gets too late in the afternoon.

Would you be willing to bring a transmission back?  I'm supposed to pick one up while down there.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
