Simple math:

Factory car; (in the condition of mine) BIG money and less likely to drive and enjoy = $50+K

Tribute car; affordable money highly likely to drive and enjoy = less than half the price.

Not so simple question:

If my 1974 Tii (with an actual turbo) has emblems of a factory turbo car, does its value (whatever that may be is still less than half a real one) stay the same with those emblems or decrease if I take them off?

With emblems it’s a “tribute car”

Without emblems it’s a tii with a turbo.

The bebate continues.

I say no effect.  It's a badge.  It can be glued on or taken off.  Someone's not going to say "Gee, ida offered you $10k more if you had taken 5 mins to glue a badge on it."

 

FWIW, I have a 76 02 with a 74 tii motor, badged as a tii.  I paid what it was worth irrespective of the badge.

I would assume that the closer your tribute car is to a real factory turbo, the more it would lose in value when it becomes "a tii with a turbo"

 

Also, Turbo livery is really cool (aka $$$) to some people (including myself)

 

Clearly you should post pictures!   :)  (is this about the one that's currently listed in the classifieds?)

If it's legit, it's worth good cash. If it's a clone, you may appeal to someone but won't get the same cash as a legit car.

Even if your Tii has a turbo, it's not a real 2002 Turbo in a collectors eye. Look at how many Chevys run around with fake SS badges on, they are cheap compared to the real deal

I'd say enjoy the car, drive it like you stole it. Stop using cars as monetary objects and go thrash it on a back road, it's far more enjoyable than staring at one in a garage

Facepalm, if that's the case the dudes with 1.6L acuras must get a ton of compliments. Might as well go put one of those 5 dollar turbo badges from pep boys on it so you can increase the profit margin lol

Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful car and even if it has full turbo parts and everything but the vin simply does not equate to a legit turbo. It looks like one, it goes like one, but it is not a real 2002 Turbo. I would love to have that car I admit it, but some potential buyer will look at it as it is, a clone and clones rarely ever get the same money as the real cars they imitate.

Buy a 68 chevelle base, put a period correct 396 in, with all of the other SS options, it still wouldn't make it a real SS. Vin numbers will kill any notion of a clone.

This debate is, I suppose, more about appreciating a car for what it is and less about what it is not.

Trying to get to the real sense of value for a really clean nice 74 tii turbo equipped car verses a turbo tribute.

The vain logic starts right off at "it's not a real turbo". At least when it comes to the potential buyers I encounter. My return logic is then why are you not searching for a real factory car?

This is the beginning of why I ask is it just better off to not liken it to a tribute car. Etc...

I get your point, the thing is someone (as I'm sure you have gotten tons of comments already) will undoubtedly say well, why does it look so much like a turbo. The thing screams 2002 Turbo so that will always be in question. I do like however that you would post it as not being a real turbo and trying to scam people that way.

It's a clone, that probably the best way to categorize it. I think you will still get good money if you ever sell it. I'd find a mint Tii online, compare prices and the work done. Maybe 5-10 on top of what a pristine Tii goes for but not much more.

here's my take on your car.  it is a well-sorted clean car and i've inspected it up close to know.  my opinion: it's a great 74tii with a nicely added Turbo system.  for me the Turbo decals and associated stickers are garish and only benefit the factory originals.  Frankly, if i were the design king at BMW at the time, i would not have put the Turbo stickers on the originals, either.

 

i think the turbo fenders, front and rear spoiler are sufficient design clues to alert the cognoscenti.,

The value in cars, albeit intrinsic by nature, besides the sum of its parts and quality plus any “bluebook” valuation, is the experience. Do people who build and own Cobra recreations or other Shelby platforms think they own a real piece of history? No, they want the affordable experience of such without the high cost of ownership. No?

Far more folks driving around in replica Cobras than in tribute Turbo 2002's which indeed is the point. Here is a car you can be proud of and drive with vigor for far less than it costs to build or own in factory form.
