The Other '74Tii In The Family

OriginalOwner

Recommended Posts

I bought my '74tii in NOV 1974.  My sister liked it a lot and really enjoyed driving it.  She's a very good driver and I was never worried when she was behind the wheel.  Her husband was a mailman back then and spotted a '74tii in a garage on his route.  A couple of years later, after talking with the original owners many times, my sister was finally able to buy it in mid-1977.

They still have it, in the garage, covered with rugs and tarps and other such protective stuff.  It doesn't get a lot of use these days here in SoCal.  I think it has around 240,000 original miles.  A couple of changes from stock configuration, so I'll guess 95% original.

Last week it saw daylight for the first time in a couple of years.  Fired right up and taken out for a cruise around town.

WOW - looks fantastic Carl.    Hmm - trapezoid mirrors on a square-light car.

Any more details to share?

Love the polished wheels - what brand are they?  Tires need a little air though from sitting.

That is a tight cul-de-sac!

Here is where I grew up (that is my bike with training wheels) Picture(s) taken by my dad in 1970.

That driver's-side trapezoid mirror is OEM, mine has it also.  He found and added the right-side mirror years ago.

No idea of the brand of wheel, he found 'em in some SoCal junkyard for a cheap price.  I'm guessing the original rims are in some shed in the backyard.

Other details .... hmmm .... vaguely I recall:

-- interior re-upholstered.

-- Pertronix installed.

-- he installed lowered rear & front springs, but didn't like the stiffer ride, so as I vaguely recall they were un-installed.

-- driveline rebuilt by a shop in Ventura.  Removeable U-joints with a zerk fitting installed.

-- transmission rebuilt.

-- stiffer sway bars front and rear ??  I changed mine in 1979, I think he followed suit.

-- engine has never been out of the car, all the insides are factory original.

I guess the most important:  never been bumped or in any sort of accident.  Everything nice and straight.

Cheers,

Carl

Hmm - trapezoid mirrors on a square-light car.

Actually, trapezoid mirrors are correct for all 1974 2002s. The rectangular mirrors were introduced in very late '74 or early '75. The '74 brochure (Inka car at an airfield on the cover) is an example, although its photography was probably done in the latter half of '73 (I've never seen a dated example of the '74 brochure). And if you look at the '75-'76 2002 brochures (one with red cover, one with a Sienabraun car on the cover), because their photography was done in late '74, the mirrors shown are still trapezoid.

So...all U.S. tii's were made during the "trapezoid era"!

Unrelated: your sister's tii is far too nice to languish in a garage, Carl! Very nice!

Regards,

Steve

I knew making the comment about the mirrors would cause some raised eyebrows.   What I should have said is "you don't see too many square light cars with early mirrors".

I'm sorry for my un-needed dissertation, Jim! And my gut reaction to your original comment was "If Jim doesn't know when the trap-to-flag-mirror switch occurred, the larger forum certainly won't know!"

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
