and on the motor you have.

Do you a 10.5:1 schrick 316 8000 RPM car that sees a lot of track? Then go close ratio.

Is it a stock daily driver? Then go overdrive.

A close ratio 5-speed has a 1:1 5th, which is the same as 4th on an overdrive, (or a 4-speed.) An overdrive will drive just like the 4-speed except that you get an extra cog for cruising and fuel economy.

What are you planning for a diff?

If you are racing but cannot find a CR, then an OD tranny with a 4.1 or 4.4 differential willl be just as good. The higher diff will give you more pull at all gears except in 5th OD.

If you find a CR, hopefully it is one coming from a 320i, it is stronger and more available than one from a 2002.

They do not have the same mounting bolt pattern. In your case (M20) you need the tranny from a Euro 323i with the mechanical speedo drive gear. An e30 325 tranny doesn't have that speedo drive, as the speedo is electronic.

You spend a lot of time "stirring the porridge," and it buzzes at higher speeds (same ratios as the stock 4-speed in top gear), but it feels quick, and there are no "dead spots" while you're waiting for the engine to spool up after shifting gears. I'm very happy with the combination.

The 5 spd CR and 40%3.64 LSD has a cool nostalgic feel to me that I like. However, in most situations I feel that I can drive the OD car faster.

I am sure that it has something to do with the parts availability. Knowing that I can pick up an OD for 300-400 bucks allows me more freedom.

But, it depends on what you want it for. My 2 cents is the OD and 3.91 for your car.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
