well the engine is now out, in the unlikely event that i sober up tonight ill pull the head and get to the pistons. more likely though i will pull it apart tomorrow. I am hoping to have it back in the car by this weekend.... unless more problems arise. Thanks for the help, ill keep everyone posted!

The engine is out of the car, and the head is pulled. the bottom of the valves and the top of the pistons are pretty black with burned oil. Is this going to cause problems? Is there a simple way to safely clean the burned oil off? Also take a look at the cylinder walls in the photo and let me know your opinions on wether or not anything will have to go back to the machine shop to be cleaned or re honed. Thanks!

Can't edit for some reason... would also like to mention the crosshatching in the cylinder bores looks fine. If you still wish to verify proper ring position, just make sure the clearances are still good (probably are).

It does appear the oil is coming in through one or both valves. But that's all I can say from here.

yeaah i was expecting it to be black, but not this bad. I do know for a fact that the rings are improperly placed in each piston because i took video footage and photos of everything as i went so thats at least part of the problem. How do i tell if the valves are bad as well? what should i be looking for while inspecting them?

Since you know the second ring was wrong and it was smoking due to oil getting past the rings flipping the rings should fix it. If you machinist was competent when rebuilding the head with new guides and seals they are fine. I would not worry about the valves at all. Use brake cleaner to clean up the black on the chambers. Pistons look fine. I recently took apart my engine after only 3 hours running, that was break in, dyno and 20 minutes track--maybe not quite as black but cleaned right up (well, except for the #1 piston, but that's a different story). Cross hatch looks good, no need to re-hone.  --Fred

I would not be dismayed at all by the oil on your pistons and head. This is what was making the smoke. You would be surprised at how little oil squirted in the the hot exhaust of a stunt plane makes all that smoke! You know the cause. Have the confidence, and put it back together. At worst case, you would just have to do it again, and isn't that fun? Ha!

Try to clean it maybe with a little EZ-Off oven cleaner. Be careful with it and read the directions. Or just hit it with carb and brake clean and small wire brush. Be careful of wire brush debris.

Or just put it together and let it burn off with a few 100mph blasts.

Oh, I wanted to add.

After installing my motor this time from the bottom with the subframe I would never do it from the top again. But a word of caution to people with big IE headers, you need to remove the header first as it won't clear the unit body frame rails.

+ on Brake-Clean. You should be able to see the valve seals thru the springs with a flashlight. Much easier while head's off. I'd check just in case, but the upside down ring wouldn't be working as intended. You checked the other two rings I assume.

Just check the oil rings, my bad ones had 1/8" gap !! all rings in the right way at the shop but huge gap on oil rings let oil in big time.

Yeah it could definitely just be oil from the rings. I'd just hit it with some brake cleaner and leave what's there alone. It will eventually burn off when she's running well.

You know the rings are upside down, so fix that and just take a peek behind the valves for evidence of oil and make sure the guides are whatever they're supposed to be. Would hate to get it all back together only to have missed something else and have to tear it all down again. Done that before.

And yes, even the tiniest drop of oil will make a ton of smoke. It may take a few days to burn off depending on where the oil is.

yep just pulled out the pistons... looks like the rings were the problem. Valves seem to be fine as far as i can tell. I should have it all back together by the weekend.
