Scratch on pistion sides

Hi-

After cleaning 4 cylinder pistons, I noticed that there are vertical scratches on opposite sides below the rings on all 4 pistions, but two are worse than other two. Also two pistions top edges are pitted slightly on one side (not 90 degree angle but slightly rounded and pitted). Does it mean they need to be replaced?

Also, if you know - what caused the scratched pistons and pitted rounded edges on two pistons, if other being old and worn? I am trying to see if there are other parts I should look into that could cause the problem as listed above.

Thanks-

Jim

vertical scuffing on piston skirts is usually from pistons rocking in the bore ie worn older motor, but can be caused by other things also.

the pitting may be from detonation. have your heard your car "pinging", does it loose lots of power on hills etc?

may also have digested somedamnthing in the intake and it bounced around a little before going out an exhaust valve.

good luck,

b

Thanks-

I bought the car a few months ago and it had no power at all with compression reading of 30 to 60. Obviously, I am rebuilding the engine and I had no idea how many miles on the engine. I was just concerned if I should re-use the pistons with the vertical scuffs and minor pitting.

I will try to get pictures of the pistons sometime today.

questinoable parts (by some folks standards) and they worked fine for a longdamntime, but it really comes down to $ in your pocket and how much "insurance" you get with new parts. the old ones may not make as much power but they may be perfectly adequate for your needs.

If you reuse the pistons, by all means smooth em up before using them and make sure the block is clean and smooth also.

Best of luck with it,

Britt

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
