2002 Beauty Shots

Taken sometime around 1980...my buddy pumping fuel into his 1967 1600, my TR6 in the background at the service station we both worked at. After we got into a nasty t-bone accident in the 1600 shortly after this photo was taken, we "repaired" it by pulling the nose out with the tow truck's winch, then painted flames on it...dopey 20-year olds paying tribute to Alan Arkin's car in The Inlaws. He later sold the car, unfortunately. I wonder if it's still around today? My confidence is high that the Triumph has rusted itself into the earth by now.

Coop,

How did you get the panel gaps on your door so tight???

No idea!! Funny, you're the third person who has asked me that question in the last six months or so. I hadn't ever noticed that the gaps were tighter than those on other 02 doors...

Lol, that's funny, Delia and I were discussing the stance yesterday because I'm not happy about it either. But we think that the issue is with the sagging rear and not the front of the car (which, amazingly, is devoid of the U.S. spec spacers!). Of course we could be wrong about this but Delia is awfully knowledgeable and bought these cars new off the showroom floor. She was driving the tii in front of me to the shoot and I noticed right away that the rear tires had a negative camber attitude which looks terrible! Anyways, I'll keep you posted but potential solutions at this point include changing the rear springs and/or finding some thicker, rear spring pads. Any input on this is appreciated as always!

You may have already seen this, but a while back c.d. posted the color code spring rates/lengths.  This may be helpful, should you decide to locate 'new' stock springs, or to determine whether the rears have sagged.

At the risk of droning on and on about springs, I think it was very obvious we're dealing with a set of original-to-the-car springs.  They have about 55K miles and I'm quite certain the fronts are in the front and the rears are in the rear.

Due to the previous restorers efforts, in all likelihood, you'll not find any markings on them whatsoever.  But the wire thickness may be a giveaway.  Regardless, we have no replacement springs available at this time.

IMHO, the rear springs have sagged.  Adding some thicker spacers will level the car and rectify the negative camber (2-3 degrees) condition which is apparent even while the car is unoccupied and at rest.  FWIW, in a side-by-side comparison, it actually sits LOWER than the rear end of his M2.

Looking at a profile image of the 1973 Inka 2002tii built by BMW Mobile Tradition back in the mid '00s, you can see how perky the rear end is.  Not so on COOP's restoration.

One thing is certain: After 18 months of "re-restoring" a "high-dollar restoration" - there is still much to do.

OK, enough about my saggy ass already! We'll get it figured out, I promise!

I'm changing the subject...Here are some pictures of the other car with a decidedly meaner stance, taken the same day.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
