2002 Tii 72 - Grill Question

Hello

I am on the way to buy a 1972 2002 Tii, but I have some concerns about the grill.

I though the grill had chromium up to 1973: the grill is supposed to become black when the rear lights changed from round to square. So, all 2002Tii before end of 1972 are supposed to have a grill with chromium and round rear lights.

But unfortunately, the one I am looking was built in july 1972 and has a black grill with round rear lights.

Some exemples:

This 2002 Tii was built in July 1972 and has a grill with Chromium

This 2002 Tii was built in June 1972 and has a black grill without chromium:

Do you know how to explain this difference?

Thanks a lot for your help, I am very new in the 2002 world...

The car in your lower pic has the optional quad lights grills. Macartneys book says "the quad headlamp grills were mostly black plastic, and were made in both early and late types."

Someone may have fitted the later quad grills. The quad grills are quite rare.

Cheers,

Ray

The Golf yellow one looks correct. The 2nd one has dual headlights, which was not a factory setup, so it might be a custom job.

The VIN on the engine is stamped onto the machined boss at the rear of the engine just above the starter bolts, back near the firewall.

Actually the 2 previous pictures were examples. The car I am looking for is this one:

Well those are the correct grills/noes, just looks like someone's taken a can of spray paint to them.  Pretty common back in the day to give your older car the look of a newer one. (at least that's what I'm told by my great great grandfather).

Your pic further indicates your grills are correct.

Just to the right of the radiator would be a snorkel, if that nose had been replaced. As shown here http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v355/raykoke/IMG_0007-1.jpg

Tiis did not have snorkel noses but it seems most replacement noses were snorkels. So one can infer your nose was not replaced,

My main concern now is to check the engine number.

I am currently located in Singapore and this car is in south of France.

My friend went to see it, but told me it is impossible to check without removing some parts of the engine. Do you confirm?

I will send you more pictures just after.

See the post above from John in VA. The bottom right photo shows where the car's VIN is stamped into the engine block. Not hard to find if you know where to look, and it can be done without removing parts.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
