Went on a pilgrimage to the local pick n' pull this weekend with my li'l bro, who was visiting from New York. Only one interesting BMW, but some other interesting vehicles gone to their final rest...

This was the lone 2002...pretty well picked over, but it looks like it was a decent car before the nose job. Colorado I think...

I've always liked early Z cars...several are in various states of decomposition at Crazy Ray's...

240T.jpg

The Baltimore City location of Crazy Ray's has a used car lot out front, of cars supposedly too good to put in the salvage yard. This Volvo 242 Turbo was in really good shape for only $850...good thing I'm saving for a MINI or I might well own this thing today... ;-)

I've always been partial to the funky lines of the early Celica. This one had nifty mags and was in good shape aside from the front-end damage.

I *will* own a Vanagon Westie someday. I liked this particular Vanagon because of the script on the door..."Home of the World Famous Bean Pies!" How nice!

Hope you enjoyed the tour...

...I think Matt Cervi got some stuff out of it.

That Volvie Turbo has some floor issues. I think it got an Earl Scheib job. I love the sign on the windshield - "$850 today only"

It's been there for 2 months while the bondoed-over rot begins to conquer paint.

GET YOUR MINI!

Tim,

Marty and I have also seen some interesting cars at a couple of the local salvage yards; a euro E-12 525, still had the Solex 4A1 carburettor on it and euro bumpers, a euro E-23 7 series, I think it was a 728i, all gauges in German, etc..haven't scoured the yards here all summer though., have to see if he "drives that Mini silly"!

i had the last year for the air cooled engine. I think that was 87. Anyway, the best westy to look for , INHO, is the 4 wheel drive one, mid 80s - rather rare, but they get you into and out of off road stuff that the regular westy has problems with. The "eurovans" are too gucci for me, but they do have the power from the water cooled 6. If i had that westfalia again, i would put the most powerful engine i could find/make into it. when fully loaded w/ camping gear, etc, my westfalia would crawl up mountains flat-out at 35 mph in 3rd gear. that was it. flashers and right lane the whole time.... just like the big rigs. That sucked. But noone makes close confines interior components like the germans: brilliant use of space and very functional galley/sleeping/storage. good luck with quest.

...upwards of $20k for nice ones! I'd love to find a regular Syncro and put the appliances/bed in and just forgo the roof. I also dig the Vanagons that have been converted to a new 1.8T motor...that's slick!

Nice Westie in the pic!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
