Good Price On Sachs 228Mm Clutch Kit Kf13801 At Rockauto

Recommended Posts

Pursuant to the 5-speed install, I pulled the 4-speed out of the tii this afternoon. I yanked the clutch out to have a look at it. There's only minor visible wear, and there was nothing wrong with the clutch while driving the car, so I planned to reuse it, or at least reuse the plate. But then I saw the date stamp -- it says "9/89." Yes, the clutch is nearly 25 years old. Just.... can't... reuse...

The price of Sachs plates and discs ain't cheap. But some web-sleuthing unearthed the Sachs kit -- disc, plate, t/o bearing -- part number KF13801, sometimes listed as KF138-01. There are two references to it here on the FAQ. FCP Groton has it for $231. AutohausAZ sells it for $214. But the winnah, as we say in Boston (we really do say "wicked" too) is Rockauto at $203. I haven't found a Sachs/ZF catalog that actually lists it as the kit for a 2002 with a 228mm clutch, but the Rockauto site says it's a 9" clutch. 228mm is 8 31/32". I just ordered it.

Anyone need the throwout bearing it comes with (since I need the 323i t/o for the 5-speed install)? I'll sell it cheap.

I use my local guy in Long Beach, CA and typically pay $150 for a Sachs clutch kit 228mm for a tii. I pay even less for the 215mm kit I believe.

The shop is called Friction Materials by the intersection of Anaheim Street and Santa Fe Ave in Long Beach, CA.

I doubt he ships though.

Danc02-->Wow, great price!

HENRYNBMW-->Just because I bought a Lotus doesn't mean I'd go all soft and buy a Spit.

Wyobmw-->Can't give you a direct link; you need to go to rockauto.com, select BMW 1972 2002tii, type in "clutch," select "clutch kit. I'm doing a 5-speed install. For a car with a 228mm clutch and flywheel, you need a 323i throwout bearing.

Rockauto sent me an e-mail confirming the $203 price. Maybe I got the last one at that price. autohausaz had the next lowest price at $214.

I snagged the 323i t/o bearing, new Sachs open box, on eBay for $30, no returns. We'll see if it works out. I'm an inveterate bargain hunter but sometimes wind up buying things twice through this sort of penny-wise-pound-foolishness, though on average, over the long haul, it usually works out. Bavarian had the best price new for the t/o bearing at $58, but as with everything at Bavarian, they don't list the supplier; you have to call and ask.

Hey, thanks man. I know what you mean looking for the best deal.  Not as easy as going down to the corner parts store anymore.  The internet can be a blessing and a curse for stuff like this.

I will look on eBay for the t/o bearing and maybe get in touch with Rockauto to see about the discrepancy.

Again, thanks for the guidance.

I actually ordered a 2002 clutch kit from Autozone for $127.  Not Sachs, but Duralast with lifetime warranty, unfortunately I can't report on the quality or even if it is the right clutch.  I ordered it and they were supposed to get it in in a couple days, but after three days passed I got them to track it down and it was out of stock with no re-stock date from supplier, but worth a try if you are looking for a deal.  Greg

Rob, last time I bought a new coil spring pressure plate for my '69 (6 bolt flywheel), perhaps five years ago I got it in an original Sachs box; the pressure plate was dated 1981!  Works just fine...

FYI, the Autohaus AZ price was a bit higher than Rock Auto, but their parts ship free when the order is more than $50.  Them's the guys you buy clutches, brake rotors/drums, calipers etc from!

BTW, you're gonna love that 5 speed on the highway--800 fewer rpms at a given speed in 5th vs 4th.

Rob, use the old one. It will give you new material to write about when you have to pull the tranney next year to replace the old clutch.

The thing is, when you add RockAuto's shipping, they usually cost more...

...especially if you need 6 things that come from 6 'locations'.

Very true. I found this out the hard way.

Hey, thanks for sharing that. It's right around the corner from me (and right down from the Italian deli). I'm going to check them out. -KB

The kit arrived and checked out. It came with clutch plate, disc, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, alignment tool / sexual aid, and lube. A fine price for the package, particularly if you need the throwout bearing.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
