LISTED-11-5-2013

Some say the summer of LOVE was in 1967; however the real affair began two years later. The year was 1969, the time of hippies, protests, lifestyle experiments, free love, and social revolution. Born in Germany 1968, this BMW 1600 was #009 to roll off the line. Destined to head West like so many seeking the new and different. This revolutionary uber efficient, nimble, and sporty sedan’s destiny was to become tempered on the mean streets of Oakland and the surrounding Bay Area. While gigantic fuel greedy rockets from Huston thundered to the outer reaches of orbit, so did Detroit monsters thunder down peaceful boulevards. Was Love really in the air? Yes, in the form of OPEC, cubic inches, and poor handling, go in a straight line mentality. As this German fledgling “Giant Killer” ran the CA streets, the mind melting performances of Hendrix at Woodstock filled the air. The convention was on excess, like the party would never stop. However there was the one who ordered this car back in the day. They knew better, and put their money down on the winner.

Here lies an old school survivor replete with “from the day” Cal Custom add-ons. In its time, few Euro-tuners raced stoplight to stoplight. Instead; brave individuals dared to get behind high revving four cylinder, independent front and rear suspension rockets. Without cheaply produced China go-fast stuff, “Made in America” parts were it. It’s all different now, with much to choose and better, but to see a vintage dominator set up when it was more about ingenuity than internet is special. You will fall in love.

1969 BMW 1600-2 VIN# 1567009 Polaris Nue

Ordered with a four-speed, sunroof, rear sway bar, and radio long gone as removed to accommodate the tachometer. Many of the earliest cars were only equipped with a clock, which this one still ticks but won’t keep time.

Basic features include:

Silver dollar gauges

lap/shoulder belt

Low back bucket seats

Center console

6 fuse 12 volt electrical. I’ll be damned if not all the electrical items, like fan, wipers, gauges, lighter, lights, signals, etc… still work.

Solex single barrel with manual choke

4-cylinder engine in stock state of tune

4-Speed transmission (replaced with newer 242 unit)

4:11 rear (long neck)

13” Cooper metric 165 x 70 x 5.5” steel rims.

Disc/drum brakes w/ dual reservoir/ single line master

Euro shorty bumpers & turn signals

Chrome exhaust tip

Mostly everything else standard for these cars is present and working.

Non-stock features include:

Cal Custom: shift knob, splash guards, air cleaner, tachometer

Momo wheel

K&N breather

Talbot style (English make) bullet mirror

General condition of facts:

Working speedo/odometer shows 9K miles

Interior:

Original blue and black scheme and is amazingly in great shape. Seats have no major wear or tear while the carpet is nice and clean too. Headliner is good with only one 4” rip (repaired) above the drivers head. Dash has had a pad over it and the few cracks present are not that bad. The dash is still impressively nice. Glass in crack free and clear. Door cards have no holes and are straight.

Driveline:

With a simple turn of the key this car starts right up and runs nice and quiet. Runs cool and strong. No smoke emits from the tail pipe or under the hood ever. It runs through the RPM range nicely and with no hesitations. It’s fairly clean and importantly dry from oil soak and does not leave an oil drip when parked. The transmission has been replaced with a Getrag 242 keeping the existing clutch and mechanical pedal intact. A professionally built driveshaft fitting a UV joint and a 4 bolt flange was made. The new hybrid shaft is balanced with new pilot bearings. The transmission at install received a new fluid & throw out bearing as well.. Brakes are in good working order, but recommend new shoes and pads soon. It is a turn-key car and with a little more shake-down drives, it can be a daily driver.

From BMW’s VIN decoder, the only information I could find since the VIN’s were recycled in the 80’s. The last 4 digits (5377) is total production of 1600’s

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
