Fuel Issues 74 '02 And Timing.

Still trying to get my car running, purchased a few weeks ago with no prior history on it. Replaced the Weber on it, cleaned gas tank, new alternator bushings, and new battery. Still turning over but not quite catching.

As far as the fuel goes, something isn't adding up and I don't see where in the world the fuel inlet for the carburetor is coming from. I am also skeptical about the throttle cable I purchased because it seems too long and unrestrained. I have added some pictures in an attempt to make sense of all this. This is my first 02 and my first project in many years so any help would be great. In addition to the fuel system diagnosis, I plan to set my points on the distributor but that will be after I make sure everything is connected and going to where it should. Thanks again!

The end of the throttle linkage sits into the firewall behind that heater hose. you should have a spring that connects to one of the holes in the linkage tab and hole in a gutter under the rain shelf.

As far as the fuel inlet in the carb. tracing back, your fuel line is connected to the plastic filter. fuel line -> the fuel pump, fuel line-> which is laying over the valve cover, should be connected to a plastic fuel line coming from the firewall from inside the cabin running along the inside passenger side

linkage rod from pedal also connects to carb linkage rod at one of the tab holes. secured with a right angle springclip. I can't describe it well. Sorry, I no longer have downdraft to take a picture

Is the fuel filter filling with fuel when cranking? If it is I would look at doing a major tune up with new points, condenser, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Check the static timming to make sure distributer is at least close enough to start. Check spark from coil also, may be weak and need replacing.

Good luck .

Thanks guys. Here is a picture of the secured throttle cable. Still no luck in finding that fuel line and no fuel is even getting to the carburetor so after I am sure I am getting fuel to the carb, then I will begin to check fire, points, and timing. Bmw fan, what exactly is close enough to start? I've read a little about setting timing on the 02 but do you have any shortcuts?

The plastic line should be coming out at the indent in the firewall to the left and below the white clip that is holding the two brake lines together.

? where does the hose at the fuel pump terminate?

just to confuse the issue....It is always a remote possibility that the PO has switched the lines and was drawing fuel from the metal retun line which is located along the underside of the driver side frame rail which terminates at the frame rail below the battery tray

the mushroom bolted to the side of the head with the brass ish looking cap is yer fuel pump. it is already attached to the carb with a filter in place. the other end has a hose on it seemingly draped over the valve cover. that needs to hook up to the plastic line., take a picture of the exhaust side of the engine, for our reference please.

sorry, I see now. the second picture has the fuel line in the air, it needs to connect to the plastic line in the firewall

the only remnants of any smog stuff I see is an air return into the intake manifold under the carb base, it looks to be capped. it doesn't appear that you have a front opening port on the exhaust manifold nor do I see  an egr canister under the intake manifold.

firing order: 1342 stamped on the valve cover

1 closest to fan

4 closest to firewall

check for spark at a wire: remove wire from plug, and ground it to the exhaust manifold to check for spark. alternately you can hook up a timing light and see if you get a blip when you turn the ignition.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
