E21 Parts Compatibility

Recommended Posts

I got a call from a friend that told me there was a E21 at the pick'n'pull with a M10 in it and that it had some goodies.  I went and had a look and found a bunch of things on it.   Being new to the 2002 world I'm still trying to figure out compatibilities of some of the parts. So I have some questions.

It had a ceramic coated header on it, long tube but I could see any markings on it.  Could anybody I.D it?  Do headers for E21's fit 2002's?

It has a Distributor #0 231 170 214 w/petronix in it. I assume the advance curve would be different? Would this be better or worse for my car?  What is the difference?  How do I find out curves of the different dist?

I currently have the original 0 231 180 003 distributor in my 1972 car.

Will E21 seats fit in an 02? or do bases have to be modified?

I appreciate any input.

The header probably won't fit- it'll hit the steering gear.  Probably.

The dizzy, if the car's early (pre 80) will fit and work.  If yours is

old and worn, and this one is in good shape, it will be an improvement.

The later dizzies wore out a lot slower.

If it's a 5- speed car, grab the transmission.  If it is, though, the dizzy won't

work for your car.  The pertronix might.

If it's a 4- speed car, and the transmission is cheap, it will work in your car

if you need one.  The E21 is durable compared to the early 4- speeds.

Recaros will fit.  The others, why bother?

Check if the diff is an LSD or if its cheap grab it anyway (with the output shafts).

Always handy to have a spare diff.

Thanks.  It is a 1977 4spd car but I have to ask... if it were a 5spd why would the distributor not work?  I'm going to doing a 5spd swap this winter.

As for the seats... it has recaros in it, I'm going back tomorrow to grab them :)

If it has a 5 spd it is a later model.  1980 on (5 spd) 1.8 litre and the distributor turns the opposite direction of the earlier 1977-79 2.0 Litre motors.

Yep, early dizzy is 2002- compatible.  Ideal?  dunno.  it'll work.  later one will not fit- wrong gear and direction.

Since it is the early car, the front hubs will work for a tii strut big brake conversion.

And you can use the mirrors.

And the rear brakes.

And the diff.   I agree- never hurts to have a spare if you don't know yours is in good shape,

and the early 320 is a marginal improvement over the 2002 quality- wise.

the sunvisor clips also work.

heh

The rear view mirror is much larger and fits if you clearance the arm for your window seal..  Not sure on the earlier e21s, but the sun visors might have the extensions that go behind the mirror, I often wish I had those visors.

Tii guys need the front hubs for brake conversions.

So I went today and grabbed the Recaros out of it. Paid $81 for the pair of em. Pretty good!

BUT, I realized as I was about to take out the passenger side seat that it doesnt recline.... WTF?  Why would one seat not recline?

The drivers side did..  Did the PO install the seats on the wrong sides?  Even so, why would they not both recline forward?

As for the steering wheel, its a 3 spoke but missing the centre button.  No wheels on it...

Recline forward?? Pix are too small for me to determine anything.

If it was the stock "sport" steering wheel, the horn button is ~$26 new - 32-33-1-120-193. Not too difficult to find used.

The drivers seat has a pull lever to fold the seat forward so passengers can get into the back.  The passenger seat does not....

I'll take better pics

The windshield wiper relay on that E21 has 7 terminals; that'll allow you to add an interval setting to your windshield wipers pretty easily if you have a 74 or 75 (76s all have that feature).  All you'll need to find is the three position steering column lever and make a wiring harness.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
