Upgrades to Seat Stuffing?

I have a pair of '02 seats with good upholstery but rotten stuffing. I know I can get the horsehair pads from a number of sources. But horsehair is not exactly a modern material, and $100/pad appears to be a high price for seat stuffing. Has anyone looked for alternatives? What is the best material to use? Why?

Oops, sorry for the double..As I was saying, Dave has a pretty good seat business. He may know of alternatives. Depending on what you want to do there is a company in Oregon taht makes airplane seats. Oregonaero.com I bought their Universal seat cushion for the collapsed drivers seat on the 72. Good product. Excellent support. They use a special foam for seat cushions and told me a couple yrs ago they could re-do '02 seats. have no idea what that would cost.

I keep looking at the ads in the VW magazines for many items. Circa 30 years ago many folks looked at the VW places for various parts. Currently I see lots of VW ads for seat cushions, etc. Since peoples rears must be withing a certain size range the seat cushions can't be radically different in size, and the enormous size of the VW market means lots of competition price wise. It might be worth checking out in the VW mags (Hot VW's, etc.)or in person if in souther Cal., where so many of them are. Just a thought, and lets us know the results if tried. I would think a German VW seat replacement component would be closer to BMW (and cheaper) than an aircraft seat part. J. England BMWCCA 0892

This is an interesting take. I'm Mid-Atlantic (Delaware) but there's a VW restoration shop not far from where I live, and another close to where I work.

Thanks

I restuffed my '74 rear seat using synthetic horsehair $15 from furniture reupholstery store and 6 oz. polyester batting and polyester "nu"foam(very heavy polyester batting in cushion size)from fabric store $35. Believe neither synth.h.h. or polyester batting will crumble over time as do genuine h.h. and polyurethane foam. Are much less expensive than flow/ temp sens foam typically used in aero installations. Also repaired several rips in vinyl with dacron sail repair tape plus automotive "goop" Best of luck.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
