Unfortunately I had some contact with the Koepchen 2002 at the CSRG Charity Challenge race 2 weeks ago. The car suffered some damage to the left front fender. Here's the in-car footage. What do you think?

Ouch - bummer about the damage.

 

Seems like a instance of knowing your fellow competitor as much as anything; who can you drive side-by-side with, and who not? As a racer / competitor, I'd have hoped the Camaro would have left room (but have learned not to count on it unless I've watched the driver's tendencies).

 

VARA would have likely faulted you, as we preach you're not entitled to pass until / unless you fully-clear the car you're attempting to overtake (when going in side by side, the car who was in front approaching the turn has the right to the apex). Vintage racing is also about car preservation.

 

Car sounds great; welded diff? -KB

@mikebontoft: Following my shunt with the Camaro the yellow Mustang got by and he and I had a great dice for pretty much the rest of the race. He would pull away out of 11, and again going up to 7, but then I'd catch right up through the twisty bits. It was a lot of fun, and he raced me VERY cleanly.

 

Not always the norm with big-bore drivers, as you saw in the video.

You are correct about knowing who you are racing with. This was the first time I ever saw this guy. He did not finish the qualifying race on Saturday but somehow managed to convince the powers that be to grid him 10th in the feature race. I heard about this fact sitting on the grid before our race. I fault myself for not realizing that he assumed the rules didn't apply to him and would race like that too.

 

SOVREN and HMSA assume that drivers look before they dive for an apex, and if there is a car there on the inside you give them racing room. Later in the race he dove inside me going into turn 11. His front tire was even with my back tire going into the turn. I knew he was there and left him the inside lane through 11. That is how I learned to do it.

 

Not welded, but limited slip. Actually we found it necessary to disconnect the rear sway bar after the first practice as I was lifting the inside rear going up through turn 2 and turn 4. I think the rear springs are a bit stiffer than we need for Infineon.

I've seen this many times. You get fully beside someone but they turn into you and you hit the brakes (natural reaction).  Then the damage is on your front and his rear.

 

In my mind the camaro guy is at fault.  You were fully beside him and he should easily be able to see you.  He probably did not expect you to catch him but that's not really a good excuse.  If he was looking toward the apex, like any good driver, he would have easily seen you and a small correction would have sufficed.

 

I could go on and on about vintage racing, drive attitude, big bore vs little car, but that's my take.
