Hello everyone!

I wanted to introduce myself to the board and share some photos of my new-to-me roundie.

I've been looking for a "reasonable" classic car for a while, and the round-tailed 2002s were prime candidates in my price range. I spent a lot of time looking before I found what I was searching for: a handsome all-stock '71 4-speed in Los Angeles. I bought the car and drove it home to San Francisco, where it now lives. I'm the 5th owner - this car has been loved in its lifetime and its history is, for the most part, well-kept.

It's my second car, and my first older vehicle. I plan to keep the car as original as possible, performing mechanical work myself when possible and learning as I go. It appears to be structurally sound, and since I've swapped the alternator it's been a cheerful and reliable ride. I don't know how much I'll be posting, but I'll be reading and absorbing and probably posting some questions when I get stuck with issues. Happy to have found this community!

Great 02. Now get ready to drive it back to LA for the SoCal Vintage show this weekend. We'll be taking a drive down from the Bay Area tomorrow.

Nice car....looks very original too--4.5" rims, trapezoid outside mirror etc.  That's good.

You have a "modell 71" car, built after March/April '71 and differing in detail from the earlier cars--knee level side moulding, all black face instruments, wiper on/off switch on the turn signal stalk, etc etc.  The closer your VIN is to 2570001 the earlier the car.  You can drop BMW Classic an e-mail and they'll give you the actual build date, date of delivery and to whom it was delivered (most likely Hoffman Motors, the BMW importer at the time.

Lotsa expertise on the FAQ, don't be shy about asking questions and searching the archives; friendly folks here.  And...welcome to the fraternity/sorority.

Many many thanks, I'll send a note to BMW and keep collecting information on the car!

I received some very cool 'period' photos of my car from a previous owner. Debating whether I should seek out some similar foglights - was there a 'factory' type of lamp, or did he have something aftermarket mounted?

Very nice photos--where were they taken? Clearly along the coast--radar in back ground, almost looks like Ben Lomond Mountains near Santa Cruz but not quite. Cool vintage pics....and a ton of body roll! Upgrade those sway bars if not done already :)

Those were taken in the canyons of Malibu - right by the intersection of Las Flores Canyon road and Rambla Pacifico.

This is the other cool photo I got on my first day of roundie ownership - recognize this guy?

Regarding sway bars - not sure how to proceed on that. I love the car because it's so original (aside from Bilsteins), but a few small touches could make it so much better... slippery slope.

Indeed. First thing I did when I got my '73tii (in 1983,  SF Bay Area,114k miles) was to upgrade to Hardy & Beck 19mm sway bars front and rear. Improved handling quite a bit, more stable under braking, no downside.

BTW, who is that guy? Jay Leno?!

Looks like a great ride--enjoy!   --FB

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
