My First 2002 And I Have Some Misc Qs...

I have a 1976 2002 that I have had a lot of work done to it and I still have a healthy list of small details that I would like to complete. The work was done in Texas and I am in Utah so I don't have a local mechanic but need to find one. I have never owned a 2002 and I am sure my questions will show that I am a neophyte with this car, so here are my questions...

1. I don't have a turn signal display so I can't tell when I forget to turn my turn signal off. Is that the way all 2002s are or is my car missing something?

2. My turn signals don't auto cancel. Is that the way it is supposed to be?

3. My sunroof works ok but not super smooth. The headliner doesn't seem to be attached very well and maybe that is primary problem. I would never try to tackle that type of fix so how would I go about finding someone who is qualified to fix the headliner and/or the mechanism/pulley system to make it roll back and forth more smoothly.

4. Where is the best place to buy new window handles and a handle for the sunroof?

5. Where is the best place to find a wooden shift knob?

6. I had the engine completely rebuilt with some upgrades such as slightly hotter cam and Tii pistons. I have heard it is best not to put Mobil 1 full synthetic until 3,000 - 4,000 miles. Anyone have a different opinion?

7. I want to add the insulation sheet underneath the hood, where is the best place to find that?

Thanks so much for your help!

1. No - you're missing something, like a decent ground, bad relay or wiring.

2. No - you're missing the canceling cam or it is maladjusted.

3. There are small metal clips the hold the headliner to the sunroof. Look at http://www.my2002tii.com/toc.htm for the sunroof rebuild and search this site for the download of the factory shop/repair manual.

4. New? Dealer, BluntTech, Maximillian Importing.

5. EBay, dealer, place a parts wanted ad here (in the classified section).

6. Many, many differing opinions.

There is a search function at the top right of each page. Take your time and enter a search term and learn from the previously-posted Q&As. Happy hunting, and enjoy the car.

Well shoot, I can't say anything then since I work for the best euro shop in the state (my opinion of course, but I didn't want to work anywhere else!). I would consider our lead tech to be best suited for you want done. I may have an 02 myself, but I am still relatively new in the workplace so there's tricks he knows that I don't. I know we sublet some upholstery work out to a good local upholstery place as well.

All I can say is we have an excellent parts network and some seriously awesome people. And I'd love to see another 02 in the shop. We love bimmers... they actually turned me on to the '02 and I bought one!

Sorry, just got kind of excited... If you're looking for a shop then I'd love to see a fellow member here. You wouldn't be disappointed. www.integrityfirstauto.com

Inside turn signal dash lamp not blinking--probably a problem insinde the turn signal relay.  If you can't find the writup in the FAQ archives, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll send you a Roundel column I did on the subject many years ago.

turn signal not canceling:  There's a sheet metal "thimble" that's pressed on the back side of the steering wheel that hits a little finger on the turn signal lever that cancels the turn signal.  Either the thimble is missing, it's mis-positioned or the finger on the turn signal lever assy is broken.  You need to pull the steering wheel (IIRC it's a 22mm nut on a '76) and look for the thimble.  It should be positioned so the finger on the thimble is on the left side of the steering wheel when the wheel is in the straight ahead position (mark the straight ahead position on wheel and column before you remove the wheel so you'll get it back on straight).  It might take a couple of tries to get it right.  If the thimble is missing, someone on the board will have a spare for you.  You can test the little canceling finger on the turn signal lever by selecting a left or right turn with the lever, the flicking the finger with your finger or a small screwdriver.  The lever should return to its off position.  If it doesn't, the lever is probably broken and will have to be replaced.  Again, someone on the board will have a spare if you don't want to buy a new one.

One more thing:  I broke my new engine in with 20w-50 conventional oil (a 1500 mile trip) then went to 20w-50 synthetic oil.  After 40k miles, so far, so good.

BTW, welcome to the fraternity/sorority!

cheers

Thanks Mike! I have been wanting to change steering wheels so sounds like that will be a good time to knock out a few things at once.

Thanks!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
