Tough Steering

Hey guys,

I've been having some serious steering issues lately. Since I got the car the steering has had a fair bit of play in it and theres no thread left on the box so that has been something I haven't been able to fix. Unfortunately the steering has been getting REALLY TOUGH even at speed. Although I've been dreading it is pretty much time for a new box? and if so you guys know where I can find one with a few threads of adjustment left for cheap?

Thanks,

Zack

.....and you want to find a replacement for "cheap"?

NOTICE: You're driving a BMW. Cheap & BMW in the same sentence is like "Army Intelligence". An oxymoron.

and you'll find one. Probably pretty inexpensively. And if you pick and choose, you'll more than likely find one in good shape.

Parts for 2002's really don't have to cost much. And lots of good parts are still in yards all over the place...

Rebuilding the box is like putting a brand new motor in a '66 dodge Dart- why?

But a few questions- did you make SURE the box was pointing straight ahead when yo tightened the screw down? It has slop in it when you are pointed any other direcion, by design. So if you're off center, you'll cause it to bind at straight ahead.

And are you sure the binding is caused by the box? There are a lot of other moving parts in the front suspension, and any of 'em can bind. Worth a check...

when i got the car there was ZERO adjustment left in the box it was already all the way down.

By cheap I meant I thought someone might have one kicking around that they might let go.

I'm in Oakland and I've checked out the local pick and pulls (the one in oakland , and the pick your parts in oakland) without very much luck.

who sell used parts. They get a lot more for 'em, tho, since they have both a captive audience AND a lot more overhead...

I'll keep my eyes open for ya.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
