Schrick 292 Cam Install

Have almost the same build, including cam and overbore on same head, same year. Working on adjusting dcoe40's. At what RPM did you set the timing of 35 degrees total? What carbs/jets are you running? Where can I see more pics? Where are you? I'm in No. Ca.

Check my other post 'weekend dual carb conversion' for more details and pics. I'm in Las Vegas, NV (Boulder City). I'm away from home for a bit playing soldier.

I set the timing at 3K RPM. Originally set to 35, but I've backed down to about 32 now. Used digital timing light on crank pulley. I've also installed a complete MSD ignition system. (Another thread on the FAQ)

I'm currently running:

32 chokes (venturies)

180 air corrections

60 idle jets

140 main jets

If my memory is correct, I have 7772.5 emulsion tubes installed but I'm not entirely happy with them and will try some more when I return home. I will also be installing a wideband O2 gauge to help me dial it in.

That thing probably sounds pretty gnarly✴ nice job

The single weber 32/36 was working perfectly but I wanted to do this upgrade. The added performance is good but the sound is great!

I've been thinking of this conversion and your write up

gives a great idea of scope for whats required.

 

How long did it take you from unbolting everything to starting the engine again ?

It's no more than a days work to remove and reinstall the head, once the head is rebuilt...

Getting new parts, cleaning parts that will be reused, etc., is where the time is.

The head work also takes some time.

I have access to a valve grinding machine, but you may need to visit a machine shop.

Hand lapping the valves takes a minute...

I clean up the rocker shafts in a lathe, you can buy new ones.

Cleaning the block and pistons.

Cleaning the head, timing cover, intake manifold, dizzy mount, etc.

Pre-order all the parts and gaskets you will need. Do NOT start the job until you have everything identified you will need and have it on hand. Nothing worse than getting 99% done and realizing you're missing a $0.50 gasket or some obscure part.

All in all, I would give your self a weekend to remove the head.

Spend the week cleaning stuff while the head is at the machine shop.

Reassemble the following weekend.

Clean the bolt holes in the block. Then clean them again. Aim to be able to screw the head bolts in easily by hand all the way without the head in place. Very light coating of oil on the threads

Excellent point. The head bolt holes will get filled with oil, coolant, and other debris when you remove the head. Failure to clean these holes completely will cause a condition known as hydrostatic lock when you torque the head bolts down.  The best case scenario is that you will not achieve proper torque and will have to remove and reinstall the head. (New gaskets too) The WORST case scenario is that you crack the block and then build a new bottom end AND reinstall the head. (ALL new gaskets too) 

 

Take the time to do it right.

 

What's the slowest, and most expensive way to do a job?..... TWICE! 

 

PS: Most new composition head gaskets require a torque wrench that also does torque angle.  5-step process to reach final torque.
