Paint Info- Colorado #002

The color mixes these days are usually a far cry from original. The best shops start with mixing colors to code and then adjust to match the best existing sections of original they can find in the car. Inside the trunk etc... Also, like John said, how different paints lay down on the metal vary enough that a painter gets used to how what they regularly use sprays and lays down. Painters don't usually like to change what brand and type of paint they usually spray. Also bear in mind that original was single stage (no clear) and modern clear coat paints look different in different lights.

All that said, Glasurit is the original brand of paint on our cars...

About 10 years ago my Dad had his Colorado Tii repainted. The painter liked and used Spies Hecker which is a DuPont owned German brand. Single stage. He doesn't have equipment to mix his own paint and simply ordered it pre mixed to code from his supplier. I can say that it is a decent match, but still looks like it is simply a little richer, brighter than original. If we were restoring the car we would've taken it to a bigger better equipped shop that uses Glasurit and or mixes their own paint.

That paint cost sounds kinda cheap. There are many different grades of paint within any given brand. Be sure you understand what grade of paint they are suggesting.

I highly recommend Glasurit. I had my 2002 painted with it and I'm very happy with the results. Contrary to Tom, I think $155 sounds about right for a quart. But do make sure you know which paint grade you're getting.

4 quarts = 1 gallon and $155 times 4 = $620/gallon

I paid $500/gallon for my repaint, so $620 might even be a little high.

I am in the camp, let the painter choose the brand, you choose the price within the brand. However, I had a conversation with the fellow who painted my orange car about using House of Kolor clear. He did, and we both liked it and is using it regularly now.

Find a spot in your car that has the original Colorado paint.  Someplace that hasn't been effected by exposure to the weather, road crud, abuse, etc.etc. (the inside of your doors?).  Some Polishing compound on that spot will bring the original color back.  Take that spot to your paint shop and have them analyze that spot with their photo spectrometer.

Perfect match every time.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
