I have finally gotten my 74Tii on the road after going through everything that I could.  There is a fairly loud high pitched squeal that comes and goes at various speeds.  It seems to get a bit better after the car is warm.  It continues clutch in or out and at speeds from about 20 to 50.  Not sure if it continues at higher speeds as Im still sticking to roads close to home.  I also noticed that the idle is much higher after the car warms, about 1200.  Doesn't seem to be brakes.  Might be an alternator bearing but it doesn't make any noise at idle etc.  Any ideas where to look?

Diagnosis procedure:

Is the squeal more pronounced when the car is first driven, then go away? 

Does the squeal happen regardless of whether you're coasting, accelerating or in neutral? 

Try coasting with the engine off--is the squeal still there?--if so you can eliminate water pump, alternator bearings, belts etc.

 

If the above is true, I'd suspect the driveshaft center support bearing...squeals when cold, then goes away as what little grease remains warms up.  And it'll squeal whether under load or not.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I will start to look into each of the items that may be the source.  The squeal comes and goes regardless of in gear or not.  It doesn't seem to occur at idle speed while the car is sitting still.  I haven't tried coasting with the car off yet.  The car does not have AC.  Not sure how to check alternator bushings but it appears to be mounted to the motor appropriately.  I did inspect the driveshaft bearing and it appears to be relatively new.  I will continue to investigate and update with any findings.

 

I will review the idle setting procedure and check timing again.

Sounds like a brake dragging, brake dust shield up front, or something in the drums not assembled right or sticking.

Update on the squealing carrier bearing. I was preparing to remove the driveshaft to remove the bearing and noticed that one of the bolts was't very tight. I thought before going too much further I would loosen both, preload and tighten the existing bearing. Took the car out for a drive and the squeal has gone. I am assuming that the loose fastener was allowing the bearing bracket vibrate causing the noise. For now I'm going to just drive it as is and monitor.

Very likely it's your water pump. They squeal when they are corroded inside and the squeal stops when the corrosion has been "rubbed" away and the pump is hot. If it continues to squeal it usually means it's on it's way out. Bearing surface shot.

Maybe, if you're lucky, it's only the fan belt slipping. Push down on the belt in between pulleys. Should be about 1/2" of play. Any more and it could be slipping.

Laying underneath the car, you can look up at the bottom of the pump. If you see signs of antifreeze seeping from the bottom of the pump, it's time to replace. Easy job. You'll need the paper gasket.

RE&RE Water Pump

1. Remove hoses, radiator, belt, fan, and pulley.

2. Remove bolts securing water pump. Douse with penetrating oil if they are too tight. Go slowly.

3. Clean the engine surface for the new gasket. Be gentle, don't gouge the surface.

4. Fit the new gasket carefully. It can rip and then it's useless.

5. Refit the new pump, and other parts in reverse order.

This is interesting to me as one of the 8 sounds I am trying to diagnose is a high pitched whistle or squealing that sounds like it's coming from the trunk area. Only on acceleration and when take my foot off the gas, it subsides.... Thoughts???

 

I also have a squeal from the engine which I think is the water pump but that is another story...

Pinion bearing in the diff. If you can live with it it will likely last a very long time  just rather annoying
