1St Brake Down. Facet Pump Issue

Had the touring over the weekend. Changed the oil and drove around town with no issues. This morning I had to go to the dentist and return the touring to it's storage space. The fuel pump made a louder than usual ticking sound but I thought it might be cold. I drove about 6 miles and the pump quit. BOO! I have never broken down. Monday morning and no help even at rush hour. Got the car to a parking lot and then walked the rest of the way to the dentist only to get 2 teeth removed... Walked back to my car and it starts. I proceed to drive to the storage space but the pump quit again! 2 hours later the tow truck arrives.  

 

Any good suggestions for an electric fuel pump?  Not facet. That is what is in there and there is not even 1000 miles on the pump yet...I'm even willing to go back to a mechanical pump but am worried that they are NLA...

I had a similar set of symptoms. After changing the fuel pump and still having the issue, it turned out to be a loose wire under the dash. After driving a bit it would loosen up and the pump and car would quit. 

 

When you left it for a while the connector would get close enough to work again until you went over a bump. The connection would break and the car would die.

 

So before changing the fuel pump, check the wiring under the dash and make sure everything is tight.

are you sure it is the pump and not a loose wire?  or did some crud from the tank get in the pump to jam it?

 

facets are good pumps.

 

BTW - when your car stops working it "BREAKS" down, not "BRAKES" down.....

 

 

um yeah... grammar is not my strong suit.

Ben, sorry to hear. BTW I was using a Carter 4070 with that 40DFAV. no pressure regulator worked fine. the needle seat was changed with the rebuild kit so all was well. The Carter 4070 is a bit on the buzzy side. Double check wiring as well as the fuse seats and relays if it was wired that way.

To me, the Facet pump sounds like an engine with a bad rod knock - it gets really loud when you run out of fuel.  I had on in my 2nd VW and hated the noise even with some rubber isolation bushings (gee - they were similar to the tii fuel pump mounts).

I used a number of Facet cube pumps on my late '73.  Early on (about 1980) a couple failed I think from using gasohol; I found diaphragm bits at the input.  Later I bought some from Whitney for a good price, but since they looked identical to Facet I assume they came from the Elmira factory.  I always used a pressure regulator and I think some of the occasional later failures (no pump sound and engine dies from no fuel; a few minutes later it starts right up) were due to a higher pressure pump cutting out.  My last Facet pump was a low-pressure Posiflow.  That pump fit exactly where the Cube pumps mounted and it worked flawlessly for years.

 

One final comment: I had a fuel system failure driving between the Bay Area and LA a few decades ago; I finally installed my spare mechanical pump along with the Facet and made it up the Grapevine.  I changed all fuel filters (before Facet, between polyethylene fuel line in engine compartment and larger fuel hose to Weber carb, and cleaned screen in carb) before traveling back along Route-1 with no problems.

 

I think a Facet pump located behind the gas tank is a wonderful upgrade, but a spare fuel pump is a great idea.  Oh, and pack a couple of wire nuts unless you have quick disconnects in place; they beat chewing gum!
