Cap is new but II will play the wire tag thing tomorrow. Idle was rough. Can't send photos from this app but the inside of the dizzy looks grungy and worn. Since the vacuum advance doesn't work where can I get a rebuild kit? 2002AD, Blunt?

I don't think the vacuum advance on the distributor is a factor with a poor idle, unless the plate is stuck in the advanced position. It is designed to advance under acceleration, so it would affect performance at high speed rather than idle. A vacuum leak could be a factor. spray carb cleaner or wave an unlit propane torch near vacuum hoses and ports (have a fire extinguisher handy, although I have never had trouble doing this) and if the idle picks up you have found the leak.

Lemme recap: drove 30 miles, car ran smoothly. Drove home and at off ramp experienced stall. Restarted at low idle (30 rpm), nurse home with foot on gas at stop lights to keep it idling. Replaced points, cleaned plugs (2 weeks old), cleaned idle jet. Sprayed carb clean all around carb.

Reset timing statically, sucked on advance tube ( someone else will do this next time) and got no point plate movement.

Next: check all hoses and intake holes, plug holes change hoses if warranted. Check all spark plug wires.

Is this happening just when stopped and the foot is on the brake?  Or when you have no foot on the gas?  I just had the same symptoms, realized it was when I was stopped and my foot was on the brake...it was my brake booster.

I had something similar happen when driving on a warm day in stop and go traffic or slower speeds. On the highway the car ran fine.

Adding a phenolic spacer under the carb solved the problem.

Before the spacer my weber was hot to the touch, after the spacer the carb remains cool.

The fuel was getting too hot in the carb.

It occurs when I lift off of the gas. How does booster affect it?

Since engine vacuum is greatest at high-speed deceleration, it's also running the leanest. If the brake booster has a leak, it may be enough to kill it or at least try to. Pretty much any small leak with be multiplied at the highest state of engine vacuum.

Reset points gap, statically timed (again), did the spark plug chase. Restarted and idles at 700-750. Drove around for an hour now it's idling at just below 1000rpm.

Dealer can get parts for dizzy so I'll do that in a couple weeks when parts get here.

One more thing...ran her to warm up this morning with dizzy loosened. Turn clockwise to see what happens and noted idle drop off. Turned counterclockwise and got a miss. I assume that was the ignition advance direction?

Advance mechanism on dizzy is def inop as I ran with hose off and saw no change.
