Ready to put the gearbox (stock 4 speed) back in the 74 2002, the clutch arm mechanism seems kind of loosey goosey without any pressure for the slave rod to hold it in place, is there any trick to keeping it all where it should be when reinstalling the gearbox, I have already had one attempt where I had to stop because I knocked it off the release bearing.  Other than being careful how you offer the tranny up any tricks to keeping the arm in place?  Thanks in advance, Greg

There is one trick that may help your install, and possibly help keep the lever arm in place.  If your car is on jack stands, ease a short length ( somewhere between 12" and 24") of 2x4 against front lip of oilpan and floor to ANGLE the rear of the engine down.  This really helps to align gearbox input shaft with pressure plate and flywheel.

 

Expect the lower lip of the gearbox to clear the tierod centerlink by about 1/8".  Not much!

 

Guide the box in very slowly to avoid hitting the lever arm against pedal box, etc.

Thanks, it is in and the clutch now works. I ended up using the old one and the old pressure plate. After getting the wrong one once, the ordering one which was promised on Tues. But found out Wed. it was backordered I decided the Bavarian automotive deities, with whom I am not overly familiar, were trying to tell me the old unit would be OK. So far so good.

One last question I hope, my car came without a clutch inspection plate, have acquired one, but no bolts, don't have much metric lying around anybody know the size/pitch/length? Or at least size and thread pitch, I can guestimate the length. Thanks again Greg
