engine and drivetrain Pilot Bearing Installation

Doing a 5 speed conversion. I have pulled old pilot bearing out. Ready to install new. Manual says to "impregnate felt ring with hot tallow'.  What other product could I use instead of animal fat?  Also, using sealed bearing up grade, should i grease the outside of the bearing?

If you're switching to the sealed bearing, then you shouldn't need a felt ring or to impregnate anything,  Just lightly grease the outside and tap it in with the help of a pipe/socket of the right diameter.

yep.  Just clean the rust in there (if there is) and check rear main seal since you are there.  Then dinner.

depends if you have a needle bearing type or the normal sealed one.

sealed bearing is 11-21-1-709-681/40    FAG Portugal      The one I pulled out was unsealed and very little grease.

Regardless of what bearing you use, it'll last a lot longer if you keep your foot on the clutch pedal as little as possible--just when shifting and not at traffic lights.  It'll also make your throwout bearing last longer. 

 

I learned this with my first car, a Renault that had a carbon throwout bearing (old VWs did too).  They'd wear out in a trice if you sat at traffic lights with  the clutch pedal depressed.
