Temptation Resisted

Since I was about 6 (80's kid) I loved the old 911's.  I will own one.

Just test drove a 911 3.2 today.   Looked to be in great visual shape with a clean looking engine, cool AC and a nice sounding aftermarket exhaust, but I could not get over the aftermarket short shift gearbox.  Popped out of 3rd a few times, ground a bit a few times going into third and was rough in the low gears (clutch slip I think).  Admittedly I did get better over time with the box and clutch, as it was finicky, but the owners son tracking the car for a year probably did the synchro, clutch, and gearbox no favors.  It was not right.  I need to try a better example.

It felt good slipping back into my Tii and driving home.  Original synchro and box, and it still feels like a million bucks.  One guy at the dealer said he would rather my car than the Porsche.  I agree.

But then one of each never hurts...

I am a major fan of the 911 from long ago.  I have read where the short-shift kits actually make shifting worse than the stock assembly.

this thread belongs in off topic section, but....what year was the 3.2?  they changed the tranny mid production. earlier ones had the 915 gearbox from the previous SC model.

1984.  I think it was more than just a short shift kit.  I think it was a new aftermarket box.  Out of curiosity I will try to find out.

Classic 911s, particularly the SC's and 3.2 Carreras ('78-'89), are great cars.  One of their chief virtues is that 911s after '76 are GALVANIZED.  Think of it as the Porsche equivalent of a galvanized square-tail.  The 3.0 and 3.2 motors are also quite robust if they've been taken care of.

You're probably right that tranny on this particular car was well-worn.  From what I've heard, the 915 gearboxes, if they're in decent shape, are OK.

Don't expect an old 911 to have cool AC, though; even when new they weren't very good, and it's rare to find one that works.

A classic 911 and the 2002 complement each other nicely.  There are little things about the '02 that I appreciate after driving the Porsche (the soft clutch, the effortless shifting, the position of the pedals) and vice versa (the sound of the air cooled motor over 4K, the acceleration).  It's a nice choice to have for the morning commute.

My brother has a 79 911sc he has updated to a wide body Turbo look. His plan was to do the motor as well. That was over 10 years ago an the motor had needed nothing. Oh an he lives in Arizona and his ac blows cold. Not as cold as a modern car but on a 110 degree day it kept us cool. Those 3.0 and 3.2 motors are absolute tanks if taken are of.

Certainly not mine but wish it was.

That 68 911 was on display (for sale) at the Foreign Affairs Shop near Staunton, VA.  The 02 Group had a Central VA drive and we started from this shop.  I believe the asking price on the paper inside the car was close to $ 40K - not sure since it has been a couple years.

  • 1 year later...

Hahaha... found this old thread.  Temptation NOT resisted.

This September I ended up getting a different 84 3.2 (same year as the car I tried last year... with the same color, same turbo tail, but 57K miles, not 113k).  Gear box is excellent and has a short shift kit (shorter throws but a bit more effort required as a result).  Key here is that the synchros are not worn.  :-D

The power of the 911 really makes the Tii feel anemic, and the Tii makes the 911 feel heavy in the rear (because it is).  After some initial neglect of the Tii after getting the 911, I must say each car has it's appeal, and they make for a very fun pair of cars to have.  Owning the 911 increases my appreciation of the Tii, and vice versa.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
